The biggest question mark I had about the GM hire from the first time I heard him mentioned related to defense. I wondered if he cared about it much at all after seeing so many spread guys playing passive schemes hoping the other team will make a mistake. I can honestly say now that I look forward to seeing our defense in action every bit as much as our AUffense.

As I think this through, Garner may be the coach whose fundamental capabilities are known before any other. I see the DL as the group who has under achieved to the greatest degree. If he can turn the DL play around for the 2013 season, "oh my!" WDE

There are variations on it but basically its various calisthenics ongoing with no rest on a big mat. Every so often the coach blows a whistle and they all drop to the ground. Everyone has to bust it and if someone is loafing it obvious because they are the last to the ground. Coach will make EVERYBODY start over if one guy is loafing so lots of peer pressure to give it all.

Kinda like the "Up/Downs" that Coach Boone had his boys doing in Remember The Titans? It came on the other night so that scene was fresh in my mind.

247 needs an icon of a happy face that's drooling. That is so me right now.
I'm with Pom Pom on this one. Was really worried about the defense suffering in this kind of offensive environment, but the more hires that Malzahn made on that side of the ball the more comfortable I got. Hearing them talk about scheme and workouts..... This can not possibly get here quick enough. So very much looking forward to the spring game and beyond.
Hopefully I'll see all y'all there. I'll be in one of the handicap sections.

Thanks Bryan. I enjoy these articles from the position coaches very much. Gives a nice insight into their take on the incoming players as well as a brief look at their expectations. I hope we will get these articles on the new coaches views on the current players as well. I am ready for football season to start..... got this bad taste in my mouth that I am very optimistic will be removed quickly!!

Great article BM. Can't wait to see these men in the game. I am just thrilled with the potential for improvement in our D because of both the talent already there and the new talent coming in the fall. I have not felt this good about our D line in years. CRM will have the tools to work with, now he just needs to get them sharpened up and put em to work. WDE
