For all you Jimbo Fisher fans out there, this is not a good sign

  • I just read on BSPN that FSU coach Jimbo Fisher wants to do away with the playoff, BCS, everything done to rank teams and go back to the way it was 20 years ago when sports writers and coaches did the picking.....really JF? Did you actually just confirm to everyone that you are crazy and stupid at the same time?

The coaches poll in my opinion is just totally silly - coaches do not watch other teams or games that much, especially out of their conference, and JF thinks that is the way the national champion should be picked. Jimbo, you have me smh.....Wow!

Here is what he said, you decide.

"Fisher thinks the coaches' poll is the most accurate way to evaluate teams, suggesting his fellow coaches provide the most knowledge about how teams have actually performed and, he believes, would vote without bias.

"I don't think writers could do it better than coaches could do because it's what we do, and we understand the true guts of the business," Fisher said. "(Coaches) understand the importance of winning. You understand how you win. Coaches understand the grind. Any win is hard."

Fisher revealed that his own ballot in the coaches' poll, which he said he spends about two hours per week completing, includes Florida State at No. 4 behind only undefeated Kansas State, Oregon and Notre Dame.

Asked if he believed the Seminoles were the best of the one-loss teams, including SEC leaders Alabama and Georgia, Fisher said, "I think we're as good as any of them."

The lone losses for Alabama and Georgia have come at the hands of highly ranked foes, while Florida State fell 17-16 to NC State (6-4). Meanwhile, the Seminoles' win over Clemson remains their only marquee victory of the year.

Fisher said voters -- and computers -- put too much emphasis on style of wins and strength of schedule, however, and said the eye test is a fairer way to evaluate Florida State's actual ability.

"The integrity is the key, but the computer doesn't solve that," Fisher said."

Florida State Seminoles' Jimbo Fisher wants move back to pre-BCS system - ESPN

Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher railed against the use of computers in determining the standings, saying he'd prefer a move back to a pre-BCS system in which human pollsters simply ranked teams at the conclusion of a season to determine a champion.

    geesh, comeon.....

What's a guy in the ACC supposed to do? He'd probably sing a different tune if he was at Auburn where the system works FOR you rather than AGAINST you.

The system as it is now, assures that an SEC team that goes undefeated, will never be excluded from the BCS game again. The SEC IS the best football conference in America. Everyone else can debate who's second but an undefeated SEC champion should absolutely play for the natty.

Fisher is blowing his own horn. It's part of his job.... at FSU. The game changes if you're in the SEC.

I had read the article and felt like he was more adamant against the computer portion and was looking at how to replace that piece of the BCS. He definately was not saying we should go back to way national champs were determined 20 years ago. The University Presidents have voted to implement the 4 team playoff for 2014. I think they voted on that yesterday. I think he was really just standing up for his team.

  • I agree with him, I posted several times that all this playoff does is allow another shot for some of BSPN's favorite teams. It should be conference champions only but no, they will allow at large bids ( so to speak ) and I'm telling you again that AU will never be one of the teams getting the benefit of doubt. Hell we couldn't even get in the big game in 2004 what makes any one believe that AU would be voted in if we don't win our conference. So all this playoff does is benefit other schools that BSPN shows favortism too and BTW we ain't one of them, come on to da plains Jimbo - WDE

20 years ago in less than a month, he was leaving Samford for Auburn. Maybe it's a cryptic message

  • I think the following statement is 100% correct and am shocked it's taken this long for somebody to realize it:

"I think it stinks," Fisher said. "I think the BCS and how we do it with these computers, I think we're ruining it. And the playoff isn't going to solve it, either. They've got to change how we pick the top teams in this country. It's not working. I think it was better in the old days when you did it by the eye test and you didn't have a championship game."

He makes some fair points, and, while I'm relatively young, I do kind of enjoy the old school win and be voted champion thing.

However, I don't agree with the coaches over writers thing, especially with technology the way it is today. Coaches continue to focus on their team, their opponents. With the addition of blogs (respectable ones), twitter, and what not, I have noticed the work some of these guys put in to cover the spectrum of all of football. I mean, some of these blog guys put in full days of watching DVR'd games (according to their live-tweeting) throughout the week and have access to unlimited info from various sources. Writers are continually looking for something to write about, and while it can be to the detriment of a lot of things when they are just looking for clicks, it means they have to have a much broader knowledge base, and the actual good writers don't just do things for clicks. I think there could definitely be a great system worked up using some writers these days.

"you're so vain, I'll bet you think this post is about you, don't you? Don't you?"

  • He is not the only HC out there I bet that has this thinking. I in no way would label this as not a good sign, but just an opinion that in the grand scheme of things will go nowhere.
