Excited to see power football coming back to Auburn

  • I am pretty excited to see power football coming back. Nothing bad to say about what Gus was doing, but I love to see 2-3 TE sets and a bruising FB busting guys up. Guys like Heath Evans and Rudi Johnsn. TEs that can block, catch, & run open up a lot of options. With Lutz coming back and the talent we have signed at TE the last two years I'm pretty excited to see this offense.

No more quad reverse, triple lateral, double bobble, fumble for 5 yard loss plays.... I hope.

I am also excited about the prospect of some serious QB development. We have 3 guys who need a really good QB coach, and they can compete in the SEC.

I agree I am also should have never went away from it in the first place.

Just remember, 2010 would not have happened without an offense that could move the football in large chunks or that was predictable smashmouth football. I don't look at 2011 as a failure in the offensive system, just a failure in Tubbs recuitingwhich left us with an experience/maturity vacuum.

At the same time, that doesn't mean that I think that a mixture of the approaches wouldn't be better, but I hope we never go back to 2006 and 2007 and an offense that was so run/short pass dominated that we could even get quality QB and WR recuits to even visit the campus. I can remember b4 24/7 when just getting a 5* to even consider coming to visit was almost front page news.

  • What excites me about Loeffler and the makeup of our personnel is the fact that we have the ability to do a ton of different things this year and he knows this. We can line up and go 5-wide with Blake, Lutz, Coates, Bray, and whomever else as well as line up in the I-formation with Prosch leading the way or go really big with Prosch, Lutz, Fulse, and Uzomah in the game together. I think Loeffler know what we are capable of. As long as Frazier progresses like I think he will and the OL plays to its potential we could be scary good.

We were pretty feakin physical at the point if attack in 2010. No I formation but lots of pulling guards as mead blockers and grind it out drives. We just went about it differently. Weird that we all think.of the spread as finesse offense when in.reality a team has to be more physical in the spread to effectively run the ball.

When have we not had power football at Auburn? We are, and have ALWAYS been "Running Back U". It doesn't matter what type of offense we run. What matters is having an offensive line that can knock a D line on their butts and open a hole for our running backs to get through. Whether we are using a true fullback or H-back, or any other variation of back field, the O line has to be able to knock the D line back. We have always run grater than 60 - 70 % of the time. We have never had a pure passing game, but if the D has 8 or 9 in the box, then you have to pass or speed to the ends with misdirections or reverses. The Great Auburn offenses have ALWAYS had Great O lines. I think this year we will start to get that Great O line back and with the backs we have we will see them run wild.

If you are expecting a team that lines up in the I-formation with multiple tight ends 90 percent of the time and runs and runs and runs, I'm afraid you are going to be disappointed.

I'm not expecting to see the I-formation 90% of the time. I am expecting to see us run a multiple formation offense. I am hoping to see less of the sideline to sideline and more vertical. The best game we played last year (IMHO) involved giving the ball to Dyer 30 times right up the middle against USC. I got tired of us running 30 yards east/west and still losing 5 yards on the play.

I realize the OL is key to any offense.

If the OL can't open the edges, how do you expect them to open holes in the middle where the defense is stacked? Also remember that many of those east/west plays were trying to break Omac down the side, and a lot of them did just that. Omac's sweep threat enabled Dyer to gain many of the yards he did.

  • I agree most of it was O-Line probs, but that shouldn't fly with 3-4 classes of talent at that position going forward, not last year. Last year we replace virtually the entire line. Should be Diff this year, not the best, but much better. Just my Opinion.

I agree. This year's line should be bigger, stronger, much more experienced and hopefully something that was sorely missing from last year... leadership. If CGC and crew continues in their recuiting and we don't have excessive injuries, I don't think we'll ever again see the OL problems we had last year. That's why I place most of the blame on 2011 on Tubb's recruiting and not on any particular system.

I also think that we will have a good year in 2012, but 2013 and 2014 could definitely see us in the hunt for the BCS or whatever it will be called by then. Just remember, the odd years are when we have the toughest schedules.

  • I am not arguing about the need for a strong OL. I am saying I am happy to see more of a power running offense. More 2 TE sets. More Lutz catching and not playing FB. A real FB in the backfield.

The interviews from some of the top TE prospects in the country seem to imply we are going to see TEs more involved in the offense. I think this is a good thing. We have some TEs who can block and catch really well.
