I don't know if it will work or not, but I can't think of a single college coach that ever went to the NFL and had success, who had not previously worked in some capacity at the NFL level.
Schiano did fine this year, but he had been an assistant with the Bears. Carroll, obviously, had already been an NFL head coach. Bobby Ross did fine with the Chargers after Georgia Tech, but he had been with the Chiefs prior to that. John Robinson stayed with the Rams a long time, but he had been an assistant with Oakland before USC.
Anyway, he might be great, but I think he'd be the first to go from college to the NFL without any experience of any kind and have success.
If anyone can think of an exception, post it. I might just be missing an obvious example.
