  • Its hard to get excited about the future of Auburn bb when you switch from all the 4 star guys in football to the guys we are looking at in bb.

The good thing - you only need five or six really good ones in bb to succeed.

  • Not anywhere near the level of talent I thought we would be recruiting with a new arena and a new coach. Go ahead and flame away 1st graders. We are not gettin what we are paying for in basketball. Any other conclusion is BS.

Have to agree, 89. Paint it any way you want to, the guys on AU's prospect list are not D 1 players. Success breeds success, but Coach Barbee has yet to prove that he can lead Auburn. Baseball seems to be in a similar situation. As much as I like Jay Jacobs and the current coaches, Auburn seems to be falling behind. I am really hoping that they can all improve things during the next sports year. Call me negative. I call me realistic.

Seems to me the program was a mess when Barbee took over.I think we need to give him a chance to get some momentum going.

  • Well, he is on his 3rd year working on nearly 5 million dollars worth of pay. We have a brand new 80 something million dollar arena. PM has said repeatedly their is nothing lacking in support. Yet we are still near the bottom of the SEC, have only a couple returning players going into Barbees 3rd year. Please enlighten me how we are getting our moneys worth.

Most of the guys in that notebook are going to be highly recruited and rated and would be an upgrade in talent over what Auburn currently has on the roster.

I think it's to early to say.The program has been in a funk for a while now and maybe it's going to take some time to get out of it.How long did you think it would take Barbee or anyone to get it going in the right direction?I was thinking at least four years and maybe even longer given certain circumstances.

    sl1969

  • We are not any farther along than 3 years ago when we hired him. Most of his recruits are gone. Who is to say that trend won't continue? We are told this class coming in is a top 25 type class yet I haven't seen it ranked in any top 35. I would hope with a new arena, full support by the admin, and a good coach that it would be no problem to compete for a winning SEC record by his third year. With our returning players and all freshman coming in, I don't see this happening. Hope I am wrong.

  • "The sky is falling, the sky is falling..."

Give it a break and let the man work. It's not Barbee's fault Chizik went and showed a new coach could when a NC in 2 years... We all knew the basketball rebuild would be lengthier than the football one.

We will be just fine in basket ball just be patient... and no 2 years is not enough time to make a judgment.

    ALLiDOisWIN

  • The Sky is not falling in basketball, it has been on the ground for a long time. Don't worry about what I think, there are some very influential basketball supporters who are keeping a very close eye on everything from a background perspective. When they get fed up with what's going on, changes will be made.

    aufan89

  • Contrary to popular belief, all is not peaches and cream with mens basketball.

    aufan89

  • So aufan89, you are in charge. What do you do? Fire the coach again? Nope, we've done that over and over. Hire a hot shot up-and-coming coach? Nope, we've tried that. Build a new arena and upgrade our facilities? Nope, we've done that. Place emphasis on upgrading recruiting? I think we are doing that and doing it well. Disband the bb program at Auburn? Just continue to bitch and complain? (seems to be the choice of most) No coaching staff will rebuild the Auburn bb program in less than five years. Tony Barbee and staff are doing the job right and if we are patient, we might get there. Most really good bb prospects are more interested in getting to the NBA than where they go to college. Why would you pick Auburn if you can go to Kentucky, Duke, NC, Florida, UCLA, Texas, U Conn., etc. etc. That makes it very difficult to get the really good guys. We can't even get the best in-state prospects - most prefer to go across the state or go out of state.

  • We have only had 3 coaches in almost 20 years. That's not tons of turnover. Barbee hasn't proven one thing to me in nearly 3 years. What has he proven to you? The end of the last two years sucked as bad as any time in the Lebo era and Lebo wasn't very good. Yes, after 3 years and 4.5 million dollars and we haven't won more than 5-6 conference games out of 16? Fired. NEXT. anyone can win 4-5 sec games with our budget and arena.

    aufan89

  • Just what leads you to believe it's getting better Joceefus? Explain it to me enlightened one. Where is all your proof?

    aufan89

  • Aufan89, first let me say that I'm not questioning your inside knowledge, however the Auburn program was in shambles when Barbee got there, not one NBA type talent player was on the team, Frankie Sullivan and another post player (who later transfered) tore their ACL, and compounding that we were in the middle of another middle of the road recruiting class when he got there. Yes, Barbee made some initial bad decisions with some of the talent he recruited in that first class, but realisticly who exactly was left for him to pick from. Obviously the level of attrition this past year was extremely high, however I feel that we upgraded at every postion where someone left the team. To go even further to illustrate my point let's compare shall we: Brian Greene for Varez Ward, easily a upgrade for Auburn since Ward is not half the player he was prior to all the injuries he had (not to mention the off the court problems). K.T. Harrell for McAfee, another upgrade for Auburn in size and athleticism. Shaq Johnson for Langford, enough said. Jordan Price for Neysmith, enough said. Granger for Morena, a bigger and more tough minded player who is not afraid to compete, Dixon-Tatum for Forbes, a legit 7 footer that has an extremely high upside in exchange for a player who was 6'8 and tries real hard but is not SEC material. The only two holes in my arguement are Adamu for Kenny Gabrial, who was the heart and soul of last year's team (I really feel Adamu is a true sleeper with some nice upside) and losing Koussai. If we get Jordan Dickerson though, which is highly possible, after comparing the two players tape (they are both project players from an offensive side) that it is a draw between them as far as talent level. Then we have more than improved our current talent level and will only continue to improve through player developement and recuiting. So everyone stop bashing AU b-ball for about five seconds and realize that Barbee is doing what he has got to do, improve the team with a few high profile guys (i.e. Price and Johnson) while bringing along a few sleepers who with the right coaching and developement will turn this thing around.

  • It does appear the talent will be upgraded this year. This is Barbees 3rd year, let's see some no doubt, guaranteed, on the court improvement. I'm talking 8-9-10 SEC wins. That would be the improvement needed to show long term potential. Not another 4-6 win sec season. That is what we have averaged around here since Ellis left. So, yes, the program was in shambles, and the improvement in all aspects of our mens basketball has been minimal to say the least after 2 and a half years.

    aufan89

  • Define "chance". Are three years a chance?

    wderocks247

  • I see both sides of the discussions above. Bottom line, bb has achieved way less than anyone around Auburn should be safisfied with for many years now.

Has there been a substantial change on the court by Barbee and his staff thus far? No, obviously not. Can he still turn things around? - Definitely.

Until we actually see change on the court (hell, even off the court for that matter) there is no real basis for a lot of optimism, based on the past decade. I like Tony and all the things he promises and what he says.

Auburn can win in basketball. It has been done before, but there are apparently problems below the surface that outsiders can't see. Either that or the wrong people are in place in key positions.

All I can do is say War Eagle and hope for the best. I support Barbee as long as he is coaching the Tigers.

  • au89 how many games did u attend last year?

    rodneybaker

  • Barbee has had only two seasons - not three. There was definite improvement from year one to year two. I'm not saying Barbee is the answer - we certainly have a long way to go. But after being a season ticket or scholarship donor for more than 30 years, I think I have a pretty good feel for the program, and right now, more than anything else, we need patience and support from the fan base. I expect slow but continued progress, and that is something we haven't had for a long time.

Norris doesn't get the publicity that the other players may get because of being from a small town but he is going to be highly recruited before he graduates. Albertville is moving to 6A so the competition will be better and people will see what he can do.

  • For what it's worht, here are my observations from the camp Saturday. First, the staff did not make a favorable impression on coaches/parents by starting over an hour late. Not the first time I have seen this with this staff. Second, there were a couple of very good players at the camp but the majority of the kids were not SEC level talent. My son will likely play low D1 basketball and the coaches were spending a lot of time with kids my son has a lot of success against in AAU tournaments. It seems as though we can't get talent to show up or we can't spot talent. Don't know which it is but I was not impressed with the talent level at the camp given that we are an SEC school with incredible facil ities. Hope Coach and his staff prove me wrong but I am concerned about the future. My 2 cents, TIFWIW.

  • Joceefus, how can u say we obviously improved from the first season to last? That is a joke. We might have won one or two more creampuff games with the weakest basketball schedule in our history. We did not get better. I went to several games including the Turd game where we were embarrassed. We should have seen significant improvement by now. Jc, if we suck as bad as we do, you would think they could at least start the camp on time?
