He may want to prove that he doesn't have to be a failure at anything. I doubt he goes but to me that would be the only reason for him to go.

I think you are on the right track. I do not see him as driven by money but rather by being #1 at everything he touches. He made his case at spuat - time to move-on to another success. I also suspect that he finds the fan base to be well below his dignity.
