I was about to move to Auburn that fall. My dad and I went to look for a trailer to live in a few weeks after the storm. Not a smart move. Saw lots of trailers with trees in them.
Member of search committe to Pat Dye - "How long will it take you to beat Alabama?"
Pat Dye - "60 minutes."
I remember that storm very well (living at Neill House that quarter). The sky over Opelika was dark green. My friends and I watched numerous funnel clouds move across the sky. One of the creepiest sights I've seen. We went from one friend's apartment to another until the power outages caught up with us.
Favorite memory is of the sorority girls going to Wal-Mart to pick-up storm supplies...batteries, flashlights...and video rentals.
"Get in where you fit in." Life is, Too Short TL;DR
Opal hit on my son's 2nd birthday. At one time it was 140 mph and shown going right up Mobile Bay, basically over the top of my house. I actually boarded up the house for that and welcomed relatives from the beach. It turned eastward and pounded Navarre. I remember it well.
