Does anyone know what actually constitutes a foul?

  • Hello? Anyone? Anyone at all? :crickets: That's what I thought. The game of basketball is so distorted that I'm not sure it's even basketball anymore.

  • The official statement is that a foul is any illegal contact that gives one player an advantage over the other player. Where blocking out would be legal contact, hitting someone on elbow during shot would be illegal contact that gives the defender an advantage.

That can't be right, even if it's the official statement/rule whatever. And the reason that it can't be right is because there is no consistency in the enforcement of the rule. The rule is subjective and is proven on each and every possession of each and every basketball game played each and every year. The referees are given entirely too much room to interpret the rules as they feel necessary at the moment. Refs come out calling ticky tac fouls for the first eight minutes, let the game turn into the wild, wild west for the next 20 minutes, and then ticky tac fouls in the final minutes of the game. There is no such thing as a foul anymore, only a stoppage in play with a benefit to one team and detriment to the other based on the refs feeling of necessity to enforce some arbitrary rule since he does in fact have a job to do. For example, on one possession, Varez Ward was essentially power bombed at the free throw line while trying to go for a rebound. He jumped straight up, the defender came from underneath and pushed Ward, taking his legs out from under him causing Ward to land flat on his back with his feet still in the air. No foul. The ball shot out to half court where a spuat player chased the ball down. Our team (minus Ward who was shaking the cobwebs loose) retreated into a defensive formation. spuat passed the ball around and eventually worked it inside to Randolph at the post. Rob Chubb was between Randolph and the basket while Denson closed in from the outside. Randolph mishandled the ball, never having possession, and all three were swatting. Denson swatted air, missing Randolph and the ball while Randolph flailed wildly about, slapping Denson across the arm. Denson was called for the fall. So, again, what constitutes a foul? Controls are in place in an official capacity, however, the controls are arbitrary and rarely enforced in a proper and concise manner.

  • A foul is very subjective. Just trying to answer your question of what the rule states. I taught a class on officiating basketball and this is what it stated.

I agree. I have been saying for years now it just looks like pick-up ball in the street. Traveling, in addition to fouls, is another rule that has been neglected and I believe it is due to the "entertainment" value of the game. Michael Jordan, among others, walked all the time and was never called for it. In my day, dunking was illegal. Tell'em they can't do that anymore and see what happens. If you want to see basketball in its purest form, watch women's (most) or old tapes of the PISTOL.

  • From my understanding, blood must be drawn before an actual whistle can be blown.

  • Basketball is no longer a non contact sport. Thats why women's basketball is the only game that is enjoyable anymore. Not sure what happened, but its frustrating to watch a guy give a forearm shiver and take the ball from a point guard and no foul. However, don't try to hang on a rim!!!!!!!
