Yesterday afternoon as I did some yard work while listening to Arkansas finish us off (it's gotten too painful to watch), I thought about the fact that I had passed on free tickets to yesterday's game and wondered when my family and I would make our next trip to Auburn. I made my first trip there when I was a youngster and even though we lost to LSU that day, I still remember the fight, effort, and competitiveness that Auburn displayed. It was your typical Shug Jordan team. Auburn wasn't always the best or winning team and they often didn't have the best athletes, but they never looked lost or ill prepared to be on the field.
After the game yesterday, Coach Chizik apologized to the fans and stated that "no one deserved to come to Auburn and see that." I love Auburn, always have. Some of my favorite childhood memories are of time spent there, I spent four glorious years there in the 80s. Every time we travel there I think how I would love to be a full time resident somewhere in the greater Auburn area. But it's gotten to the point that I just can't see dropping several hundred dollars or more to make the trip to see performances like the one displayed yesterday. I know no one forces me to go go Auburn, but we love being there - not just when Auburn wins. I don't expect AU to win every game, but I don't ever expect any other team to be better prepared, more focused, or to give more effort. It seems this Auburn team has reached that point.
I don't know what the crowd was like yesterday. Maybe it was a full house. I just wonder if any others are starting to feel like me and how long it will be before people will decide that other weekend activities have become preferred to going to Auburn just to be rewarded with a miserable drive home.
Im from Montgomery, and driving home from Auburn felt like it took 2 hours.
Can't imagine how it would feel for someone living farther than 30 mins from Auburn...
