Do you really want to stick with mostly pro-style offense?

  • Ok, so I have heard a lot about how spread, gimmicky offense won't work in the SEC. The "gimmicky" part I understand. Smoke and mirror offense do not work for long against true SEC defenses, but what about just the spread without too much gimmicks?. This is what is happening at the NFL level. More and more teams are using spread formations and going no-huddle. But thats not the point.

    We have seen that teams who are the most successful right now (Alabama, LSU, Georgia, Florida) have smashmouth offenses mixed with play action. And they are having a lot of success. However, they also get the elite recruits, which makes playing such an offense much easier. Auburn has been getting them too, but with the coaching staff change coming, who knows how well the new staff will recruit.

    Any offense will work well if you have right kind of players who are disciplined and right kind of coaching, but Auburn needs something that will get them out of the 4-12 record they have against their main rivals the past 4 years.

    The main issue however, is beating Alabama. Any AU coach who wants to stay at AU will have to beat Saban at the iron bowl at least once every couple of years. And the truth is, while AU can recruit at a high level, can the new staff recruit at the level of Bama consistently? I honestly don't see anyone being able to beat Bama if the other team is also playing Bama-style offense. So then what type of an offense would be the answer?

    The only problem with that is, as i mentioned in the first post, almost all NFL teams use spread formations. It is an increasing trend. More and more teams in the NFL are also going no-huddle. Granted, the players who come from a spread offense in college also needs to have physicality in order to be drafted.

  • I really thought this new offense was supposed to be more of a mixture with some pro and some spread type play. I liked that idea but I don't think we'll ever really get to see what it could have been because it will never be given the time to be fully implemented with the type of players needed to run it, a solid and experienced Oline, and a head coach that will stay out of the way and let the Off Coordinator run it. shrug

    I like the spread offense. Saban hates it for a reason. He has only one week to prepare for something totally different. Give him any longer and he will beat you. I think it evens the playing field more for teams that don't get all the 4-5* players. Spread'em out and lets see who can keep up. I read a book several years ago from Cliff Ellis, remember him. His first job was a middle school Football coach, and he ran a wide open attack. Teams complained it was unfair. Hewent on to use that philosophy in his career as a successful basketball coach. WDE!!!

  • I've said this many times. We need to run a combination of the two styles and I do believe there are QBs who can handle the combination. It also allows for flexibility in game strategies depending on the opponent to take advantage of their weaknesses. You practice one style you get killed by the other just like last week. weagle

    I agree. I do not see why you cannot run spread then throw some power I-formation into the mix.
