Did I just hear CGC say War "DAMN" Eagle a the halftime

  • I have a copy of original sheet music of "War Eagle" copyrighted in 1955 and it has a choice of words in the chorus. Give 'em hell is printed above Hit 'em high, etc. Our family always sang Hit 'em high, but both have been around a long time.

That is sort of the way I feel. I know there is cussing in football, the world, everywhere, and I used to a lot. The words still bang around in my head, but I wanted a vocabulary better than that. I still cuss at myself too much, but not within anyone else's earshot. It is a struggle, and for someone who is esteemed by so many, I feel like he cheapened something today. We have the high ground, I was hoping we could hold it for awhile.

Do you still sing the fight song with "hit 'em high, hit 'em low"?

I'm with you and the couple others who've posted similar sentiments. Not saying I'm perfect and have never let such words pass from my lips, either. As a wise person once told me, the English language offers too many other choices.

At any rate, I too am still ALL IN and proud of our coaches and players. By the way, I didn't know that the fight song was originally "hit em high, hit em low." Thanks for that tidbit of trivia!

    WAR EAGLE!!!

The fight song was not originally "hit 'em high, hit 'em low". It was printed in programs as that instead of 'hell' as to not offend those who it might or who teach their children the 'G' version.

  • Is this seriously a conversation? WDE has been around forever. Please let's not play morality police with something this ... trivial.

In the fight song it says "give 'em hell"... Is this also an affront to your sensibilities?

Let's not take ourselves quite so seriously please....

As I said originally, "I know, I know, I know..." and I knew there would be some with this reaction. The reactions run the gamut depending on YOUR moral standards, from the angry and vicious to the same sentiments as mine. I am not acting like a prude, I am a prude when it comes to trying to teach morals to my children, grandchildren, and students. And, as I said before, I am NOT judging Coach Chizik. I still think he is a man of integrity and if I had a grandson who wanted to play for him, I would have no problem with it. Matter of fact, I have not CALLED him anything but good things. All I said was, I wish he had not have said it in public. Period.

You spelled "Damn" wrong. Yours is, "Do you know what the fish said when he hit the concrete wall? Dam!"

You HAVE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME......roflmaoroflmaoroflmaonono lol

I got my point across "Lil English major"!!!!!!!

I am not the morality police and never intended it to sound that way. All I said was I wish CGC had not said it.

"affront to your sensibilities?" I do not sing that version. My choice. You sing yours. No affront.

My best guess would be it came from the religious community. In the Bible it has the negative connotation of being "damned". Nobody wants to be "damned" so "damning" someone would be considered extremely mean. Just my twocents.

As for CGC... I respected him when I first heard War Darn Eagle. I respect him just the same now. I respect the views of those who wish he had stuck with just War Eagle or War Darn Eagle and I can fully understand your convictions. And I respect those who cheer him for fully embracing the tradition of the phrase War Damn Eagle. In the grand scheme of things, it doesn't much matter. I think those who are disappointed were holding CGC up to a certain ideal that CGC had built for himself with how he has conducted himself in public and it probably is a bit of a letdown. It's kind of like finding out your personal hero isn't 100% perfect or the saint you thought him to be.

Either way, I still love ALL of my Auburn Family, even the guy who was heckling at the basketball game (we all have a cousin we love but we're not proud of lol). And you won't find me criticizing those for their beliefs or discounting them.

    War Eagle!

Excellent point about "the ideal CGC has built for himself." CGC's frequent, public references to God, his faith, being blessed, etc., along with not hearing him say WDE in other public celebration settings (i.e., BCS and SEC games), are what raised my eyebrows about this. It's not that I viewed him as some hero or saint before and he is now somehow less. I was just surprised more than anything, and prefer to hear/say WE over WDE. I also wanted to post to let the first poster who expressed surprise or disappointment that he/she wasn't the only one who felt that way. But trust me, I've not lost any sleep or expended any energy over
    this!

  • First of all,

I don't consider "damn" by itself to be offensive any more than the word "hell"

The word "damn" was an integral part of one of Coach Jordan's "7 Ds of Success"

I use "War Eagle" as a greeting and a way of saying goodbye to other AU brethren just as most of you do, as well. Never WDE. To me WDE is an emotional, almost primal statement reserved for me to yell in special situations that tells all who hear "Let there be no doubt, I'm all Auburn till death, that being a part of the Auburn family is a special honor for me, that I'm proud to be an AU fan and will be forever, no matter what".

Even when the fates have turned on us, temporarily, I am part of AU and AU is part of me . I am Defiantly Auburn! So I yell "War Damn Eagle!" That means "no matter what....no matter what".

  • I think maybe some of you guys need to ease up on wargator.

His basic sentiment was that he would have preferred it if Chizik had just said "War Eagle" instead of "War Damn Eagle". I didn't take anything he said to be judgmental or prudish, just simply sharing his opinion. He didn't seem to draw any conclusions about Chizik as a person or his love for the Lord. I have to say, those calling him a prude are judging him far more than he's judging Chizik.

For me personally, it didn't cross my mind that he said "damn", mostly because I'm just so used to hearing people say it.

However, I can see wargator's point. While I say the word damn from time to time, I don't say it in front of my daughter. I didn't say it in front of my in-laws back when I started dating my wife. I also don't hear my pastor say it during church (out of church may be a different story), I don't hear the president say it during a speech, I don't hear CEO's of major corporations using it when speaking publicly, I don't hear broadcasters using it during news reports, I don't hear presidents of universities saying it during graduation, etc.

The point is, while all of the people listed above may very well cuss their brains out in their daily lives, they simply don't use colorful language when they are in particular situations. Usually public speaking is one of those situations.

Again, it doesn't bother me personally, but it doesn't bother me in the slightest that someone prefer he not do it. The fact is, had he said "War Eagle", this thread wouldn't exist. That fact alone may be proof that it wasn't the best decision.

This is over-analyzing it a bit, but really, there are times in life when we make a decision not based on what is acceptable or what is technically "okay", but instead of making an 'alright" decision, we make the best decision. Is it "alright" for a pastor to have a beer at a restaurant, sure, but is it the best decision? Probably not.

Like I said, that's really scrutinizing the situation, but the idea does apply. Maybe "War Damn Eagle" is fine for the head coach to say in public, but it may not actually be the best thing for the coach to say in public. So, is it okay? Sure. Is it the best? Maybe not.

  • On the fight song, I've heard both versions since the late 50s. It seems to me the lyrics flow better when it's
"Give 'em hell, Give 'em hell, Stand up and yell 'Hey'! so that would seem to me to be the original with the other version being a sort of "fig leaf" on a statue kind of thing. Maybe it should have been "Hit 'em high, Hit 'em low, Stand up and crow, 'Hey'!

I think Phillip may be on to something. Maybe this is the real reason all practices are closed. And if there were never a "WDE" there may have never been a "War Cam Eagle"

Contrary to the opinions of some this isn't church.

Much more concerning to me is the fact that ESPN has been running an ad for weeks, at least, containing a series of humorous? vignettes of AL fans greeting each other with RT.

    1) The firsat time I sdaw it I wrongly assumed it was an AL ad. Why would ESPN produce and play such an ad that rightly aggravates every other school especially us?

    2) Al fans (and other schools) have historically ridiculed AU fans for the way we use "War Eagle" as a way of sayiong hello and goodbye to other AU fans.

    3) I have observed AU fans using "War Eagle" this way for at least 50 years. When Charlie Davis interviewed Buddy Davidson on the radio broadcast at halftime during games in the 60s, Char.lie would introduce Buddy to the radio audience and Buddy would always start by saying "War Eagle, Charlie!" Actually, with his southern accent, it sounded like he said "Woe EEgull, Cholly!" and I just loved the way he said it so enthusiastically.

    4) I've never heard Al fans use RT in the same way. The way they said that sounded much more hostile, in-your-face and bellowing.

    5) I know Fl cut a promotional ad featuring their fans saying "Go Gators" to each other which I had never observed in the wild. But, up until the 90s I had never seen very many gator fans in the same place at the same time so I don't know if that ad was or is accurate.

Does anyone know the back story on that ad??
