  • Is when you burn down your own house to kill a rat. JMHO this whole smear campaign between us and the updykes has reached that point. I agree with PM, nobody has ever faced anything that comes close to what we've seen with Cam Newton and our NC. I also believe there's some funny things going on in Tuscaloosa with the clothing store and the recruitment of some of their players.

But Alabama fans and Auburn fans need to ask this question, do we want to die on the same hill as our rivals? Somebody posted earlier, that it may reach the point where football fans in this state may spend fall Saturday's listening to the crickets chirp in BDS and JHS. This has gone way past smack talk and stupid pranks, there are people out there on both sides willing to sacrifice their reputations and risk actually violating criminal and civil law.

I don't believe for one minute this started with us, but like any war it doesn't matter who fired the first shot. At this point what matters is who'll survive. I know this somebody had better step up soon and put this to rest or we'll all lose.WDE

I would give anything if we would drop the updyke series period. I am very serious about this. It was done in the past and I would support it 100%.

I am fed up with being stereotyped as "one of them". Auburn has hardly ever been the origin of this kind of crap that has gone on with the updyke nation for a century.

Nobody wins if we're all laying dead in no man's land. 19auburn49 is right. This whole thing could end up with the greatest rivalry in college football being reduced to a situation where it shares the same space with CUSA in the bottom of the 4th page in the sports section.

Auburn people feel a deep and passionate responsibility to uphold standards not written on paper, but lived from the heart.

  • 1.Takes congressional approval to change state lines. Not going to happen.
2.Not contiguious to the state of GA anyway. See #1.
3.Lose too much money going to the ACC from SEC.

It's at a fever pitch but we've always had our issues with uat when we've been successful. They lobbied every one that would listen in 2004 to keep us from playing in the NC game. And, it'll continue in the future unless both sides come to some kind of a truce. 19Auburn19 is correct.

Not many of us are still alive who remember when this rivalry was suspended for 40 years due to many different logistical disagreements - only to be brought back by both the Auburn and Alabama Presidents under threat of reduced state funding from the legislature if they did not play each year.

I think both sides need to realize what we have and work to keep the rivalry on the field. I think the real culprit of this is new media and talking heads like Finebum who need controversy to keep ratings up. Let's hope that cooler heads prevail in the future....

  • The point of Phillips blog was addressing the intense hatred and the necessity to damp it. I don't believe resorting to the tactics of TOS is what this effort needs. Nor do I believe exaggerations are particularly helpful. Calling an institution that sees itself as a benefit to the State, "The University of UpDyke," isn't helpful. But, you apparently think it OK behavior because a number of football fanatics would cheer him if UpDyke was introduced at BDF. Although I don't often think so and certainly not by my design, I have been blessed knowing and working closely with some very fine UAT people, along with Vanderbilt, Mississippi State, a couple of Utah Schools not to mention Texas A&M, and Georgia Tech. Perhaps because I respected those folks and their families they respected me. That's the way it works.
