I'm glad you didn't recruit Nick Fairley and many other Auburn greats.

Anyways, good job Tre Mason doing work as a player host!

Of course there are always diamonds in the rough like Fairly that disprove the norm, but there is a reason the recruiting analysts, that know a lot more about this than I do,( or you do), evaluate and put stars on these guys. Statistically the highly ranked guys are just better athletes, and therefore have a better chance at success. Lets just hope that all these 3 stars signing up prove to be overachievers like Fairly.

    Again ...

Where a prospect is rated by any recruiting service does not mean that is where he is rated by Auburn's coaches. A lot of people saw this kid as a cornerback. They see him as a slot receiver. They don't care how many stars he has.

WOW, Thank you PM, why is it so hard for this point to be understood?

I believe what all should note, and experience dictates, is the difference between a 3 and 4 star is not athleticism, as 3 star ratings are still held for elite athletes. The difference is based on refined technique and how much they have been coached up while in high school. The true measurement of a coaching staff is not recruiting all 4 and 5 stars but how well their recruits are coached up and their techniques refined - as well as the proper weight and flexibility training (which Mr. Lawson seems to understand and made a special trip just to evaluate that aspect). The differerence in a 4 star vs. a 5 star is truly being an athletic freak and size, but can also come down to techniques - ala, Carl who does not have the typical size (heigth) of a huge elite end, but his freakish athleticism, desire (motor) and TECHNIQUE makes him a 5* elite. I believe that this group of coaches will show a big difference in "coaching technique" than we have seen in the past and that will be the difference maker in Auburn's future success. I believe that we have not seen the best from the high recruits on the current roster and we will start to see that this coming year with solid coaching, as well as with the new recruits. Also important in that equation is playing current and new players in the position that most fits their skill sets and abilities. That is the difference in an elite coaching staff vs. elite recruiters but average coaches.

  • Bobby Wagner was a 2-star out of high school, but Chris Collinsworth considers Wagner the NFL defensive rookie of the year.

There are some 2 and 3 star players that are exceptions but go back and look at Auburns starters over the last ten years. Most of the starters are 4 stars.I have been following this for 30 years. The odds are if we are taking this kid means we are not holding out for a lot of the top players . I hope I am wrong but experience tells me I am not.

    Just a few examples:

Nick Fairley, Carlos Rogers, Ronnie Brown, Darvin Adams, Mike Blanc, Zach Clayton, Nosa Eguae, Emory Blake, Travis Williams, Rod Smith, Rod Hood, Jeremy Ingle, Will Herring, Karibi Dede, Ben Grubbs, Courtney Taylor, Eric Brock, Quentin Groves, Pat Sims, Tyronne Green, Walt McFadden, Sen'Derrick Marks, Antonio Coleman, Jerraud Powers, Aairon Savage, Craig Stevens, Mike Berry, Zac Etheridge, Neiko Thorpe, Eric Smith, Chris Todd, T'Sharvan Bell, Brandon Mosley.

Lots of NFL players in there.

This kid could be the next O'Mac. A hidden diamond...:)

O-mac was highly recruited out of high school. He then shredded the prep school ranks and was all-world when he left. We were lucky to get him. The point being is that he was hardly a "hidden diamond".

Did not go to junior college. Went to prep school for one year and then to Auburn.

I guess the film I saw was from prep. I knew there was a transition there, thought it was JC. Wasn't he a solid 4- star?

  • Tommy T. signed a ton of three star guys his last two years. Most were undersized and fast. That is the reason so many were quick to give Chizik a pass in 2011.

Most of the guys jumped at an offer from Auburn. This class is filling out with several like that.

Honestly, I am not comfortable with that fact. However, I am glad these coaches aren't bringing in many of the glory chasers who want so much attention. If it's all about being the best you can be - pick a school and be faithful while you quietly get ready for the butt kicking you are about to receive as a freshman.
