These are my questions going into summer workouts and fall camp. After a solid session of winter workouts and a productive spring, I am happy with the direction of the program, but still have some ponderings as to the where we are. I am curious if anyone else has any insight. Different areas they saw improvement in or if anyone had any areas to discuss.
Third Down Conversions
Cam year aside, we have had issues with opposing defenses stacking the box and forcing us to win it on the arm of our qbs.
While we still had a 1000 yard rusher (God knows how) we were unable to make clutch conversions.
Was it a line issue?
Was it a poorly coached receiver core?
Was it a lack of talent at qb and receiver?
Was it a combo of the above?
The line, qb, and receivers should be better coached and more disciplined this year.
Do our hopes rely on Marshall being the guy?
Do we have a qb that can complete a screen pass?
How good are our current qbs at reading and reacting to coverages?
Will we have more than 1 possession receiver?
We seem to have recruited a lot of talent at receiver the last few years but consistent execution by the core of receivers seems to be lacking.
Can anyone describe the blocking scheme at the line and how it differs from last year?
With the HUNH will it be more of a block left, right, center call as the ball is spotted?
I do not have many questions at this position.
Seems like rb is ready to go.
Just hard to replace a guy like Lutz. I will be satisfied with a good blocker and hard effort.
Pace and scheme
Seems like in years past that we would get a rhythm going and lose it with a trick play or score big with a trick play. Will we continue to go 4 to 5 good plays and risk momemtum with a receiver pass etc.
Will we continue to rely on bubble screens as our primary pass?
Will we dare to use crossing routes?
I understand we have to go with our strengths and that we are built to get players into space.
I am not saying the scheme is wrong, just asking for expectations.
Hell if a smoke draw is 99% effective than go with it.
Seems this is a big area of improvement already!!!
We need it.
Hopefully there will be some players that grow up quick and the lights start going on.
Being a Offensive Labeled team, our pool of recruits may not be as wide as some schools. I think with Coach Johnson, Cheese, Garner and co, we will eventually change the perception of our label and begin to pull in some higher profile player. Until this is a reality, I think we may have another year of Community College transfers. Is year three the year we start seeing a true SEC Defense and start recruiting like it?
Overall Wins for 2013, 2014, 2015
2013: 7-8 wins and a bowl bid
2014: 9 wins and a bowl win
2015: 9-10 wins and a bowl win
What do you guys think our respective records will be?
