  • FROM WIKIPEDIA : "Saban, announced on January 3, 2007, that he accepted an offer to become Alabama's 27th head coach following a meeting with Dolphins owner Wayne Huizenga.[20] On January 4, 2007, Nick Saban was officially introduced as the head football coach of The University of Alabama at a press conference on the Alabama campus. . . [21] Alabama ended the regular season with a 6–6 record, including a four-game losing streak, a particularly humiliating loss at home to Louisiana-Monroe, and a loss to Auburn in the Iron Bowl, the Tide's sixth straight. Alabama was later forced to vacate five wins from the 2007 season."

Oh my! The reincarnation of Paul Bryant came in and look what happened in year one! The almighty Saban, who held a Spring game in front of 675,000 fans, after being greeted at the airport by 128,000 fans and kissed all over by more women than Wilt Chamberalain, went 6-6 in his first season at uat. The fans hung on, though. They believed in Saban, because, after all, he had a NC under his belt, at another school. "Give him some time to get some players in!, " they screamed, "Just you wait!"

Seems to me it was worth that loyalty and appreciation for them.

Our guy came in with nothing under his belt as a HC. But, he had TWO undefeated seasons as a coordinator. One at AUburn, one at Texas. So, we gave him a pass in year one, and what did he do? Got us to a New Years Day bowl in year one and won the damn NATIONAL TITLE in year two. AND, barrin a loss to Samford, he still will not have a season as bad as Nicky has had at uat.

SOOOOO, let's fire him? Let's question him?

    Really????

If you are against Chiz and this staff right now, you are beneath the bammers. Period. End of story. It's truth and not up for argument.
Hang your head in shame or put on your houndstooth. Those are the only means of atonement.

  • Totally agree!

Just amazing that anyone would question the hire of CGC. I don't even know where to begin on that one.

    Scrap the offense? Dump CGM?

Yesterday was a disaster but the reality is we are ahead of where we should be with the loss of seniors last year and injuries this year. Two lost recruiting classes. Some don't want to hear that but that is absurd.

Two top 5 recruiting classes and another one on the way if we don't implode. Anybody looked at who is left in the Top 247 lately and how many Auburn is in on? If you haven't you should.

We need an O Line and running any offense without one is doomed.

  • When Coach Dye came on board you knew he had the right stuff ...the same can be said for Chizek.
Patience...today's LSU and Ala weren't built in just one year, or two.

First I've heard of a coaching change. Thanks for breaking the news. Now, can you tell the future or do you just have great sources?

WE COMING . WAR EAGLE !

  • I'm baffled sometimes by the people who I guess forgot we won a BCS National Championship less than a year ago for this first time in over 50 years.

To put it in perspective...not to be a knock in the slightest to the name of the Auburn coach that the field is named after, but he didn't accomplish what Chizik and company have in 11 years at the helm, and is held in the highest regard by Auburn fans (myself included).

  • I cant tell the future but if we keep running the same kind of no physical play get whipped at the line team out there every year, which we have done on D for 3 years and on offense for 2 years it will all be over. Chizik will get a pass this year obviously due to youth and a NC. Next year if there are no improvements made, which looking at the talent and other programs around the league we are so far behind he will be on the hot seat in 2013. That is going to be the make or break season for Gene. It will be 3 seasons since the NC he will have plenty of recruiting classes under his belt. If results do not come by the end of 2013 and I mean a 9 win season or better I just dont see Chizik surviving.

I think it is becoming more evident to most realistic fans that last season was due to a great football player named Cam. He in my mind was the greatest player in the SEC since Hershel Walker. Granted the staff did sign him, which was a great accomplishment, he made up for our weaknesses on D and O. His uncanny ability to convert 3rd downs was incredible. Dye had some great teams in the 80s but I dont think the SEC demanded the respect it does today by the national media, which hurt his teams in the polls. People forget the 11-1 team that beat Michigan was ranked #1 by the Sporting News at the end of the season, which at that time is no different than the old UPI or AP poll. Back in those days it was really a MNC.

I don't know what to say. Yes, I do.

1.) Cam was better than Herschel by far. Bo was, too. Herschel was a great RB for uga. He belongs in the conversation.
The way it's stated here, Herschel was better than Cam Newton, Tim Tebow and Bo Jackson. There have been other better
    players since Herschel.

2.) The other, less recognized National Titles are often cited on this forum by many different members. None of us forget.
We also do not forget 1993 and 2004. We are the nation's "undefeated" specialists. With the exception of Coach Dye, who led that
11-1 team and won 4 SEC titles in the '80's, and Barfield, every Auburn coach since the Truman administration has enjoyed an undefeated season. Since its first football game, Auburn has had twelve undefeated seasons and has been recognized as National champions by some organization 9 times. If you cross those two lists, and use the bammer methodology for claiming titles, (12 undefeated seasons and two other seasons (1910, 1983) which are recognized NC's), Auburn has 14 National Titles.

    Hayyyy, bammer, "Got 14?"

3.) I remember reading on this very forum that Chizik would be fired by Halloween of 2009. Then I remember reading that he would
never make it through the 2010 season. Now, after a National Championship, two straight January Bowl victories, a Heisman winner, Outland winner, Lombardi winner, SEC title and so on and so on, Gene Chizik is on borrowed time? 2 years?
You have proven the very point of the original post in this thread. 6-6, and Saban is great. 28-9, and Chizik is no good.
Said it before, and I'll say it again . . . Just Damn.

SOOOOO, let's fire him? Let's question him?

    Really????

If you are against Chiz and this staff right now, you are beneath the bammers. Period. End of story. It's truth and not up for argument. Hang your head in shame or put on your houndstooth. Those are the only means of atonement.

hater...you know I respect you as much as anyone on this board, no question. And I agree mostly with what you're saying....but with one exception.

I don't know that you can throw the "fire him" crowd in with the "question him" crowd.

To me, those are two very distinct and different perspectives and attitudes. "Fire him" is ridiculous to probably 99% of the people on this board. I don't know that I have actually seen anyone on here calling for him to actually be fired right now, this year.

For the people that do mention the word "fired" at all, which I think is a bit unnecessary, I have at least seen some fairly sound reasoning behind using the word when referencing the future. You may not agree with them, but their reasoning isn't totally unfounded. I have usually seen it mentioned in conjunction with "if nothing changes on the defensive side of the ball for the next few years.....blah, blah, blah". And honestly, I can't really argue with that.

Now, for me, personally, I suspect things will change on defense. But....and it's an important "but"....but, if nothing changes...if what we've seen for three straight years continues for two or three more years....I think we will be looking at a hot seat. I'm not sure how we couldn't be. If we continue to hang out around #70 to #80 in total defense and in scoring defense, we simply aren't going to win many games. And if that happens, Chizik will be our Larry Coker. (please don't mistake that for me saying he IS our Larry Coker....it's contingent on whether our defense ever improves or if it continues to cost us 3 to 5 games per year).

Again, I expect that it will eventually change on defense. However, can you really blame people who have lost hope on the defense? We're not three GAMES in to it, we're three YEARS into it. So I can understand how people have lost hope that the defense will come around. The next logical thing is to think, unless we have a transcending offense led by a Heisman trophy winner, the defense is going to cost us 3 to 5 games every year.

So....all that brings me back to my original sentiment. I agree that those calling for Chizik to be fired at the end of 2011 are on hounds-tooth laced crack rock. But....I just can't agree with throwing anyone questioning anything at all about the staff into that same "hounds-tooth" category. We have lost four games by an average of 42 to 14. I feel it's natural for fans (fanatics) to search for answers and ask questions. Seek termination of the coach that just won a national title? No way. Ask questions and wonder about the immediate future? Seems mostly natural and reasonable to me.

PS. I think an important thing to note too is that I don't think that questioning what's going on is the same as being "against Chiz and this staff". Maybe in some contexts of some people's posts, but not inherently so. I have questioned some things, but haven't acted like I know the solution to anything, nor am I "against" the staff. But at the same time, it's fair for fans to be against a three year defensive average of 385 yards and 27 points per game I think. So if you're against those numbers (not after one game, or one even one year, but after 3 years), then naturally, at least the defensive coordinator is going to get questioned. The fact is, if those numbers don't change, Roof will get fired. It may be after three years, or it may be after five years, but eventually, the losing that comes with giving up 27 points per game is going to cost someone a job. Some fans called for it in 2009. Some fans grumbled about it last year. Some fans call for it this year. But make no mistake, if the defense doesn't get better, eventually it won't be fans calling for a change, it will be Chizik and Jacobs. We just can't live on 27 points per game.

If 27 points per game for more than three years doesn't get a defensive coordinator fired in the SEC, what does?

  • Questioning Ted Roof is appropriate, and has been all along. The vitriol of some posters, particularly during the game, was not.
During the game there were calls for firing everyone, including Malzahn and Chizik. There were posters repeating Lou Holtz and bammer phrases relating to Cam Newton and Auburn as a one man show. There were people wanting to put betting lines against Auburn, and so on. It is always ok to discuss the ins and outs of your team, coaches, and individual players. It is always ok to discuss
all things Auburn. That's what these places are for. It is never ok to call someone an idiot for believing in their team, or supporting
their team unconditionally. It is never ok to take your frustration out on other posters who have done nothing to deserve it.
The epidemic of hate that comes out when Auburn loses or plays poorly reminds me of one fan base in particular. It reminds me of a fan base more concerned with another's loss than its own win.

The targets of my posts know exactly who they are.

    More on defense:

Outside the Auburn family, it is apparently a mind-boggle that Roof is our Defensive Coordinator. For me, the boggle is more.
Gene Chizik, IMHO, belongs in the Defensive Coordinators Hall Of Fame in Finger, TN, if there is one. So, how in the heck does he
avoid daily anxiety attacks with the defenses we've been fielding? I am baffled.
I expected, when Malzahn and Roof were hired, that we would have it all. Roof was a very experienced coach that would certainly
execute what Chizik controlled, and Malzahn was the super-genius needed to score big points!
    Right?

We should be winning games 45-7 on a weekly basis. We should score 60+ three times a year and pitch at least three shut-outs a year, right?

So, since I am baffled and have no answers, I am left to wonder one thing: Who should be running our defense?

    I know it isn't me.

But, I will also say this: If you KNOW something better than do our coaches, say it. When you spew hateful criticisms, you need something to back them up. You have to plug the hole before you bail the water.

So, I don't get it, either.
