Let's be honest here... Everyone wants wins with someone who is a "good person" too.
Flame me if you want, but, Saban my be a cocky, arrogant, angry little man... But he gets wins and has never been caught cheating or riding on a motorcycle with someone he shouldn't have been... Granted, he does curse occasionally during pressers... Does that make him a bad PERSON? Negative.
I'd gladly take wins with a coach, who even if he isn't the friendliest of people, as long as he keeps his nose clean overall.

Clearly, you still don't get it. You're thinking in black and white. Its not one or the other....again thats a lazy approach.
Many mistakes have been made by all people. That doesnt mean that they will ALWAYS do that thing they did. Is it possible yes. Wwill folks focus way more on that than they would if he hadnt done it? Yeah.
But that does not mean that one cant clean up their act.
Everyone wants both. But nowadays it seems as you only get one or the other.
If you cant be honest....whats the point of being anything?
I want a guy who's bad years are 8 or 9 wins and don't happen more than a couple of years out of 10. I want him to possess excellent character. Can he be rude or misspeak occasionally ? Yes. Can he occasionally have a few drinks or even a drink or two too many ? Yes. Can he slip up like most of us do occasionally, Yes. But, he can't have a blatant disregard for the laws and morals of our society or the rules and regulations of his profession.
If we ranked the reputations of the 124 coaches at D-1 schools, Petrino would rank #125....that's just where he is right now.
I don't see how we have to say ALL the other programs that are winning are doing so with a guy that has the same rep as Petrino. That just isn't true.
The guys I dislike the most are Saban and Meyer, and they are known to be kinda smarmy and a-holish....but neither has the national, public reputation Petrino has...as a person. Not even close. At worst, your typical football fan just thinks Saban is an uptight, drill sargent-type with a hot temper that's constantly complaining about something not being exactly perfect. They might even think he's kind of a jerk or whatever. But that's it. None of that defines him, and no one cares....after all, he's a big time football coach. It's kind of expected that big time coaches are kind of jerks, hard on players, screaming about discipline, etc.
Miles doesn't have a bad rep. Pete Carroll may have run a loose ship, but he didn't have a bad rep. Mack Brown has a fine reputation....as does Stoops. Steve Spurrier is a smart-a, but it's endearing, and he has a good reputation.
Anyway, again, I don't think those that are against Petrino think we need to hire someone that moonlights as a preacher....I think they just think we can hire someone that can win that isn't #125 on the reputation list.
Looking over the Top 25, there are 3 that I would personally say are questionable characters: Kiffen, Mullins, and Holgerson that I wouldn't want to coach my team based on characacter issues. Maybe a couple of others (Chip Kelly, Brian Kelly?) that might raise an eyebrow. Overall, just looking at the top programs right now there's no one out there with Petrino's reputation....and they're winning.
Other programs seem to be winning and have "good guys" at the helm, Spurrier and Miles were the first two that I thought of.
The either/or premise is simply a false one.

As a player, coach and fan, I want to win. 6-8 wins is for the Vandys and Kentucky of football. Good people screw up everyday. You learn from your mistakes. Might take longer for some people than others to learn. But chalk my vote up for WINS.
