It's a cliche but "On any given game-day any team can beat any other team." That said I expect the team that can and will win those two games to be our Tigers. If I am wrong on either game I will be disappointed but I will not dwell on it. Win or loose like our Tigers I will go forward to the next game prepared for a win. I refuse to have a defeatist attitude.
Attitude is Everything
I would be disappointed, but I don't think it's that far fetched that we could start 0-2.
And my disappointment would be significant after the two games, but the final judgement wouldn't really come until the end of the year. Maybe Clemson goes 11-1 and Mississippi State goes 9-4. Maybe we lose close games, and then end up beating Arkansas and Georgia later on because the team progresses significantly as the year goes on and we are more mature in the new systems.
I think it's a mistake for any Auburn fan to just declare it impossible or "unacceptable". It just doesn't reflect reality, and I think we take pride in realizing we live in a "practical world". Therefore, we should do our best to be realistic.
Clemson's offense was, at times last year, very, very good. They will specialize in mis-direction, disguising formations, and pacing us into mental errors. All of those traits are bad news for a brand new defense that relies a LOT on player reads and player calls from on the field. If we aren't on top of Van Gorder's system in week one, Clemson has the kind of offense to exploit us. That's just a fact we hope we can overcome.
Mississippi State is kind of question mark. Winning there hasn't been the easiest in recent years. Since 2009 they are 10-10 at home, but look at some of the losses against ranked teams.
4 points to #17 LSU in 09
10 points to #3 Florida in 09
3 points to #1 Auburn in 10
7 points to #12 Arkansas in 10
13 points to #2 LSU in 11 (but it was 9-6 going into the 4th)
2 points to #9 South Carolina in 11
17 points to #1 Alabama in 11 (Alabama's second smallest margin of victory all year)
I don't think Mullen is as close as he thinks to competing for titles, but those are some close home games against a lot of really good teams. So I suggest we don't judge them off the last 50 years, but look at more recent history and admit it's a place where you can lose if you're not careful. Someone is going down there in an upset sometime soon.
So, like I said, I'd be disappointed, but if those teams turn out to be good and we turn out to improve steadily throughout the year, I'll look past it as growing pains.

I checked the math on this. It turns out that you are correct.
This is for the Auburn Family and everyone who played here before we did. I love ya'll, War Eagle!' Nosa Equae 10/19/13 Kyle Field Texas A&M

"Brick by brick, my citizens. Brick by brick"
Do you always look at things so negatively TT? Dag gum you are a downer. You need to follow your own "Attitude is Everything" sig. "Your Attitude will reflect your Altitude" is mine. Right now you need to shoot some fuel to the jets and pull hard on the stick because right now you are flying pretty low in my book.
I personally think we could lose both or win both. Either way I do not think these two games will define what this team will ultimately become. If we lose both I believe they will be tough close games and we will get better because of it. If any one thinks going to Miss St is a gimmee they are kidding themselves. This is Miss State's man made rivalry and they have not beaten us since they delared us the evil empire. You can kiss Dan Mullen goodbye at Miss St if he does not start beating someone besides Ole Miss. Mullen being the inventer of college football has set his entire fall camp on this game. If we are able to beat Clemson and go to Miss St and win I think that will be more positive for this team will far outweigh the negative that losing both will be in the long run. We will get over losing the first two pretty quick. These first two games will not be easy, but no matter what the outcome we will benefit.
Funny, that same night I slept like a baby and dreamed that Michigan trounced Bama 38-16 and the Bama fans imploded. My advice whatever happens in our first two don't act like Bama fans!!

WE COMING . WAR EAGLE !
Yes it's possible but I just don't understand the lovefest with Clemson. They are replacing a lot of guys in the trenches and that's where games are generally won. Mrs. State well they are Mrs. State until they prove otherwise. But if it does happen there should be questions raised.
With the talent we have coming back on this team and as beast as our d-line should be. We should not only beat these two teams but dominate!
If you cant be honest....whats the point of being anything?
I would be very disappointed to roll out of September with two losses. However, this is a team that is likely to improve and get better every week. Part of what was so frustrating for me last year was not the blowout losses (although I did not like those at all), but it seemed as if there was no real improvement from one week to the next.
I don't see that happening this year given the coordinators we have on board. I think 3-1 and I will be pleased (so long as the loss is not to MSU--I hate Mullin).
