As we get into the meat of spring practice I'm very excited to see a cgm offense turned loose completely in the sec. We will have to have great qb play to make this work well, this will not be the 2010 version with a cam newton. This offense should be more like a machine with options and checks to get tge ball into the right hands. The defense worries me very much, scheme will get you only so far, the team with the best players and most talent win 95% of the time & on the defensive side of the ball we are avg at best. My prediction is 7-5 maybe 8-4 at best & a decent bowl game. War Eagle
I think you are too quick to discredit the D Players.
8-4 reg season 9-4 with the bowl win. And I will take that all damn day.
If you cant be honest....whats the point of being anything?
We lost to ms st, & vandy & a arky team coaches by jl smith & it wasn't close. We need to prove we can win these before we start throwing 9 wins out there.
Perhaps we should re-title this thread "The truth 4-2-13 according to obiewan". I called Yoda and we respectfully disagree. While quality QB play is always critical, to say we have to have great QB play to make this work well is overstating the situation. Let's back up for a second and be specific about what "works well" means as that is subjective terminology. Based on your comment above, I'm assuming works well in your world = 9-3 or 10-2.
If we settle on that as a working definition of "works well", then I think your second point about how critical quality defense is in this analysis is spot on. However, Yoda and I once again disagree with your average at best talent assessment regarding our defensive players. We think they are slightly better than average and when coached up in a quality scheme, will flourish as a better that average SEC defense.
When you combine better than average SEC defense with productive, point generating offense led by a quality QB you are a solid 8-4. After that, ball bounces and specific plays/calls/ref intervention etc. have as much to do with whether you end up 9-3 or 7-5. Anyway, it's a little early for all that kind of talk but to say we need "great" QB play for this to "work well" is folly. Yes QB's are critical but in the end this is a team sport. As we saw last year, when just some players stop doing their job the wheels come off pretty quickly.
I just hope the bowl game is in florida.
I Believe Auburn and Love IT...4 Life!
You should prepare yourself to live with the consequences of your decisions, whatever they may be.
This is a rebuilding effort not a reload situation, you don't rebuild in one season and go 9-3 not without a cam newton.
As much as I don't agree with Obie's dim (to put it lightly) outlook most of the time, he is completely correct ITT. Everyone was throwing out dreams of 10 win seasons last year and we see how that went. We will be better under Gus, but a 6-6 season isn't totally out of the question. I'm hoping for an 8 win season, but to expect a 9 win season with the same players we had last year that won 3 games with the best win being an OT win at home to UL Monroe is a stretch of the imagination to say the least.
And no, I'm not one of those people that are satisfied with 8 win seasons, but I am a realist. It's going to take time people. We're not going to come out first year and roll smoothly against the Bama's, LSU's, and UGA's.
I was going to put a witty joke here, but I forgot bama fans still use picture books. So I thought I'd expedite the process for you...
So judging by how you're attacking his assessment, you think we can be successful with inconsistent, mediocre QB play? No, sorry, that's not how this game works. You do need great QB play to win. Look at the last how many every champions....All had great QB did they not? And yes, I'm well aware that we aren't going to be in the hunt for championships, but what Obie said was actually correct. We do need great QB play in this system for everything to work smoothly.
Records are important, but they are also dependent on the conference one plays. Boise State has a great record every year, but who do they play? AU plays in the toughest conference and in the toughest division of the toughest conference. However, with good coaching and with the skill we already have, I like our chances against all the teams. Now, if we come away from 2013 6-6 or 7-5, BUT we were close and competitive in every game, then that is so much better than what we saw the last two years. With a little luck and key turnovers, we could do very very well. This is what makes college football fun to watch. Teams come out of nowhere every year. Hoping that we are THAT team this year. Always hopeful for AU -- and always will be!
All Auburn All the Time!
Sorry there were too many words in my response and it confused, but I said 8-4 likely with a wrong bounce/tough call/crappy ref causing that too slip to 7-5. Similarly, if you're an 8-4 team you are typically one or two plays/calls away from being 9-3. In my opinion, to imply we need Cam Newton type QB play to reach 9-3 says we actually need it to be 8-4. Again, I think that is wrong. We don't need great QB play. We need productive QB play.I think CGM and CRL have are proven they can make this happen.
For the record, I would consider 7-5 or 6-6 a successful turnaround and have stated such previously.
The bottom line is everyone is undefeated right now & we all have great hope for next season. It will take more than good coaching for 1 spring practice and 1 fall to make this better. I will say this we should get better as the season goes along but we say this every year about every team. You are what your record says you are & I see a team that while it maybe much better you are still looking at bama, uga, lsu, Texas a&m a improved ole miss that is a possible 5 losses right there, 4 almost for sure. This is the same team different coaching staff but the ones that are on the field are still 3-9 and it wasn't close guys. We don't have a qb right now that if we are honest is a sec caliber qb, the o-line looked like a jail break every game and the wr couldn't get open all year, that's not doom and gloom that the truth.
What the.... ?reading comprehension has fallen of the cliff. Since when does productive = inconsistent, mediocre QB play?... Again, I took exception with saying we need great QB play to "make this work well" (a subjective or non-explicit statement in and of itself). My point - we just need productive, slightly better than average, consistant QB play. The underlying point...It is a Team Game. Virtually anyone who has played this game at a high level would always agree that QBs always get too much of the credit for success and too much blame for the failure... and yes, I'm fully aware that AU may have an outlier data point from 2010 but before you hop on that bandwagon think about the actual NC Game for a few minutes.
Please tell me how I'm not comprehending this statement....Go ahead, I'll wait. You are implying right there that we don't need great QB play to go 10-2 9-3 in this system and in this league. Reading comprehension...hmm.
Johnny football, cam, aj, tebow, you need differences makers at qb to win championships, people who will step up when just managing the game isn't enough. We don't have that and haven't since cam
