Tigers win streak ends in a heartbreaker

TUSCALOOSA – In a dramatic final set, Auburn’s Plamena Kurteva couldn’t hold a 5-1 lead, falling 7-5, and No. 8 Alabama beat the No. 17 Auburn women’s tennis team 4-3 here Friday.

Kurteva dropped the first set of the deciding match 6-1 but rebounded to win the second 6-4 and was one game away from taking the set and the match for the Tigers. The loss ended Auburn’s school record 14-match winning streak and marked the Tigers’ first defeat since Jan. 26.

Auburn (14-2, 4-1) jumped out to an early lead with its 15th-straight doubles victory. The highlight was Auburn’s No. 51 Pleun Burgmans and Kurteva knocking off Alabama’s sixth-ranked pair of Alexa Guarachi and Mary Anne Macfarlane 8-6.

Jen Pfeifler and Paulina Schippers locked up the 1-0 advantage with an 8-6 victory on court three over Emily Zabor and Natalia Maynetto.

Alabama (13-1, 5-0) stormed back to take a 2-1 lead with straight-set wins at Nos. 2 and 5. On court two, freshman Michala Kucharova fell to ITA No. 60 Guarachi 6-3, 6-1. Then at the fifth line, Pfeifler was defeated by Emily Zabor, 6-1, 6-3.

The Tigers charged back to knot the match at 2-all with a 6-3, 7-6 win by No. 51 Burgmans at the top spot over Alabama’s No. 25 Macfarlane, 6-3, 7-6.

The win is the fourth by the freshman over a ranked opponent. She is now 10-1 in matches as Auburn’s top player in the lineup.

The Crimson Tide put Auburn on the ropes with a 3-2 deficit following a 7-6, 6-3 win at No. 4 by Antonia Foehse over Jackie Kasler. Emily Flickinger answered the bell for Auburn with a thrilling three-set win on court three, 6-3, 4-6, 6-2, as she defeated ITA No. 73 Maya Jansen.

The win was the first over a ranked singles opponent by the sophomore Flickinger in her collegiate career.

Georgia romps to easy win over error-plagued Tigers

AUBURN - The No. 25 Georgia Bulldogs pounded out nine runs on 10 hits to cruise to a 9-3 win over Auburn softball in the Friday night series opener at Jane B. Moore Field.

Auburn dropped to 20-8 overall and 1-3 in the Southeastern Conference. Georgia improved to 19-7 overall and 1-0 in SEC play. The Tigers and Bulldogs continue the series at 1 p.m. today.

"You're not going to win many games making six errors and leaving 10 runners on base," Auburn coach Tina Deese said. "We were able to fight back a little, but the game got away from us. We're going to have to regroup and get ourselves ready to play tomorrow."

Geri Ann Glasco improved to 11-1 with the complete-game victory. Glasco allowed three runs, one earned, on nine hits with two walks and four strikeouts.

Hilary Mavromat started and took the loss to fall to 5-3. Mavromat allowed five runs, all earned, on five hits with three walks and one strikeout in two innings of work. Lexi Davis pitched the final five innings, allowing four runs, two earned, on five hits with two walks and two strikeouts.

Auburn plays host to Alabama today

AUBURN – No. 31 Auburn (10-4, 2-2) will try to win its fourth straight today when No. 27 Alabama (11-5, 2-2) visits Yarbrough Tennis Center.

Admission is free to the match. The first 100 fans will receive an Auburn Tennis koozie, and fans can grab a slice of free pizza from Domino's between the doubles and singles matches while supplies last. Saturday's weather forecast calls for clear skies and highs in the mid-70s, ideal conditions for an SEC tennis match.

Auburn is coming off its first road sweep since 2007, having won 5-2 at LSU and 6-2 at Arkansas last weekend.
