If were going to take Gus why not give Kirby Smart a try care to give your opinion or anybody else
Defeat doesn't finish a man - quit does. A man is not finished when he's defeated. He's finished when he quits. - Richard Nixon
I dont really get the love for Smart. He may make a good head coach one day or not. All we know is he works well in sabans program. As long as you have thick skin, probably anyone could.
Saban's approach is very simple. Recruit the best, develop them into full grown men, develop a sound game plan and then dont screw it up.
It really is that simple.
All we know about Smart is that with the best talent he can generally manage to not screw it up. Is that the new qualification for being AU's head coach? I'd say, probably not.
Saban's mentality has been proven to be successful, and if you dispute this I have a beach house in Kansas that I have for sale. Kirby Smart has helped to produce some of the best defenses the SEC has ever seen. The question is to what extent were those defenses influenced directly by his philosophy, as opposed to Saban's. There are, of course, several other factors that are weighed when hiring a head coach, but IMO Kirby Smart> Gus Malazhan. I have heard from multiple sources that Gus is a quirky individual, and I do not think that he has the potential to be the face of AU football. If there is not a true home run hire available, why not give Smart a shot? He has the best upside out of several, if not all, of the candidates mentioned.
I'm not saying he's a bad coach. Is he really the best that we can get, though? I certainly hope not.
This isn't a 'learn on the fly', kinda job. Or at least it shouldn't be.
I don't want anyone that Dye wants.
