This came up in another thread, thought I'd share it here.....
I don't know the formations, but here are the red zone plays. It's easy to see how they went bad...poor results on first down.
1st and 10 on the Clemson 13 - Rush for -2 yards by McCalebb
2nd and 12 on the Clemson 15 - Pass incomplete (Reed TD catch)
3rd and 12 on the Clemson 15 - Pass complete for -5 yards to McCalebb
4th and 17 on the Clemson 20 - FG
1st and 10 on the Clemson 11 - Rush for 1 yard by Frazier
2nd and 9 on the Clemson 10 - Pass incomplete
3rd and 9 on the Clemson 10 - Pass incomplete
4th and 9 on the Clemson 10 - FG
1st and 10 on the Clemson 12 - Rush for 3 yards by Mason
2nd and 7 on the Clemson 9 - HOLDING
2nd and 17 on the Clemson 19 - Pass incomplete
3rd and 17 on the Clemson 19 - Pass incomplete
4th and 17 on the Clemson 19 - FG
When you set up all three red-zone opportunities with 2nd and 9, 2nd and 12, and 2nd and 17....you kind of take away some of your run options...unless you ran some kind of delayed look or one of those QB runs from a 4 receiver set where he drops back and then takes off up the middle, something like that.
For the record, we averaged 4.35 yards per carry on 1st down run plays for the game. On those three possessions we averaged 0.67 yards per carry on 1st down.
My guess is that if we had gotten at least 5 yards on first down on any of those three red-zone possessions, we likely would have scored. But we were in a hole all three times. It's a lot to ask Frazier to be in a known pass situation on a short field. Of course, had Reed been a little more aware of where he was, Frazier has a nice TD pass and perhaps we win the game.
But overall, 1st down simply killed us in the red-zone.
I agree 100% wiht what you are saying here.
Lets hope we get that part of our play straight before Saturday!
If you cant be honest....whats the point of being anything?
6 pass attempts, 1 completion for minus 5 yards. That won't work either.

One stat is left out on all three red zone first downs. NO JAY! Why was that? If he stays in the game, we power all three into the zone. Coach OVERTHINK. KISS.
Wrong, he called 3 straight passes on one redzone possession, but Frazier had to scramble and turn a possible sack into a 1 yard gain. Go rewatch the game. I think we should've run the ball on first and second down, then hopefully be in a more manageable 3rd down if we're held under 10 yards. Even if we only got a couple or none on 1st, I'd like to see us be persistent and run behind Prosch in the redzone. That said, we still should've had one TD if Reed gets a foot in. I think with Prosch and the avg rush being over 7 yards for McCalleb and Mason we should look to pound the rock in the redzone.
