The desire to please everyone was one thing. In hindsight some of his behavior seems like a defense mechanism. A similar situation, though not as extreme, happened to my oldest and she's having to deal with it.
I agree with you completely. I think this story also explains his perception of Trooper, the kid obviously, still needs a father. I hope he manages to succeed and have a blessed life.
