Players usually make the coaches, not the other way around.

  • Let's hire a good OC and sign/keep our elite offensive recruits. It isn't worth waiting for the "perfect guy" if it means losing players that will cost you several wins over the next couple of seasons.

If I have a choice between Cam Newton and Nallminger vs Barett Trotter and Gus Malzahn, I am taking the former every time. You would be a fool not to.

In the short term this is true. In the long term this is in my opinion. Ludicrous. The coach will affect which players come over a longer period of time.

Gotta disagree with you on this one. It takes natural coach-able talent in the players and coaches who can see past the potential of those players through observation. Then the coach must instruct and motivate that player to make the needed changes to reach that potential. Without that coaching, a player would probably not reach his true potential. JMHO.twocents

You make a great point, and there's some truth to this, but the perfect argument against it is Ed Orgeron at Ole Miss. He was bringing in some of the top recruiting classes in the country but could barely make a bowl game after four years.

While you're right with the Cam / Nallsminger v Trotter / Malzahn comparison, it's too simplistic. You need coaches that can bring in talent, coach them up, and execute a gameplan. I think that's why college coaches aren't necessarily successful in the NFL and vice versa.

Either way, you're correct that we need to get an OC in sooner than later for recruiting.

Cam Newton with me as OC would be better than anyone else at QB with Malzahn as OC. Cam was a once-in-a-lifetime player so that comparison is moot. Chris Todd with Malzahn was better than Chris Todd with Tony Franklin. If coordinators (and by extension all coaches) don't matter why interview anyone, just give the job to a GA, or a student. Doug Barfield was a great recruitter but he couldn't coach. Pat Dye was both. Whom would you rather have?
Finding the right man for the job is crucial.

PS are you a Clemson guy, an Ark guy or an Auburn guy? Can't tell by your name.

I have to disagree with you roarkau. It is everything to get this hire correct. Players will come and go. The way this staff recruits the quality of recruits want be a problem. We just witnessed how the wrong coorinator will do for you with talented players. The reason everyone is up in arms about the OC hire. I truly believe it Is because the people that usually are in the know isn't in the know with CGC at the helm.

Totally but respectfully disagree - see Mark Richt who has done less with more - especially since BVG left - or whoever is the coach of the moment at UT. A bad hire (not saying bad coach, just bad hire for AU) can have a much longer lasting affect than losing one or two recruits (see Tony Franklin)
