Who do you want?
Assuming we strike out on Patterson, and Petrino doesn't get a shot, I want Gus. I wouldn't be unhappy with Smart, but I think Gus is more ready for the job, and actually has a love for Auburn. No chance that I would support a Chad Morris hire...
my vote is for smart, i know he's a gamble but i think or hope he could get our defense back to playing the way it used to. i also think he would help keep a lot of our big name defensive recruits and possibly gain or bring some with him. i would be fine with malzahn but just prefer smart at this time.
Outside of Petrino... NONE OF THE ABOVE!!!!
What has Malzahn done to warrant the love he seems to be getting from some? Went 9-3 in the sunbelt with someone else's players? Chizik went 14-0 with someone else's players. Proved that he is a master evaluator and developer of talent? The qb's he recruited were benched for a true freshman. Proved that he's a disciplinarian like AU needs now? He took a known troublemaker to ArSU with him. Has he learned from the best in the business? Chizik, Graham and Nutt aren't coaching trees to brag about.
Malzahn may turn out to be a great coach. I just don't think he's what AU needs at this particular time in history. It just looks like a mediocre hire to me. That's just my opinion though and there's not a soul on that search committee that cares.
I like Gus and will always be a fan of his for helping us win a NC but I want our team to go in the direction of playing hard nose defense and get back to having a tough defense like tubs had it rolling during his time. So of the two, I would say Kirby Smart. It's not like Gus has that much of an advantage of him as far of head coaching experience anyways, just one year. I got a feeling that as long as Kirby has been with Saban and around that program then he probably has a good idea of how to get the job done. Just my opinion though...
Patterson. Only proven HC with experience.
