Which one is best and why?
I've got DirecTV and like it way more than cable. I pay the extra $12 for the sports pkg and get plenty of football on Saturdays. And I don't need the bspn game plan deal. If you sign up with DirecTV now, I believe you can get Sunday Ticket for free (access to ALL NFL games shown; Jacksonville tends to not sell out and that creates a prob for their home games). You can use your box for tailgating or get an extra one under your account and tote it with you on game day (as long as you know how to set up your satellite dish).
Plenty of HD Channels offered with their HD box, plenty of sports as previously noted, HD/DVR box too. I even think they pkg internet now.
Now DirecTV does have their quirks too just like cable and other satellite providers. As far as the reception going out during rain storms, its true, but you can counter that with spray on, car wax. You put it on every year and it makes the water bead and run off your dish fast so it doesn't interfere with your reception.
If you go with DirecTV, PM me and I will give you my account number so we both can receive the $10 off your bill per month for I think 6 to 10 or 12 months. Just remember, you have to have the account number before you set it up at your house.
Do what we did, lay out all the different packages, to analyze the costs associated with each, and then decide what your budget is for cable or satellite TV.
Can't give an opinion about all of them because I've had Dish for 5 years, but I'm pleased with Dish. I have the top 250 (or something like that) with HD and DVR. They have every channel that I care about in HD including SportsSouth(the network where the Braves are shown). Pretty good customer service. Signal doesn't go out any more frequently than when I had cable years ago.
DirecTV has the best overall experience for me..
Dish has the best equipment.

Lots of different opinions in this thread. I recently switched from DISH to DirecTV and couldn't be happier. DirecTV is much better, in my opinion. Plus, DISH still doesn't have AMC (Walking Dead, Breaking Bad, Hell on Wheels) and several Disney HD channels my kids like to watch.
I have had DirecTV for about 6 years and love it. Had Charter before, and it was horrible. We lost service more often than DirecTV. And I do not lose it but during the worst part of a rainstorm. I am going to try the spray on wax...sounds promising. I have MLB Extra Innings and NFL Sunday Ticket....love them both. Plus now you can record in one room and watch it in any other room.
