I've been a Petrino guy from day one. If we did not get him, I wanted to go with an offensive oriented coach that had his own system. If not Petrino, maybe a Butch Jones type. I love Gus' offense too, but I'm concerned that the discipline issues (on and off the field) that we had under CGC would continue. Since it seems that K. Smart may be the man, make me believe. The only positive I see from him is that he might bring discipline and a hardnosed attitude back to the plains. What makes this such a great hire?
I want to be excited about the hire and right now I'm just not feeling it (if its K. Smart).

2010 BCS National Champs
1. Its going to be hard for anyone to convenience you its a great hire because of "ZERO" Head Coaching experience. What we can show you is examples of where people where successful in making the transition. Jadennis put out a great post on this.
2. There is much debate on who actually calls and runs the defense. Kirby smart runs the defense. Is it Saban's defense that he runs? Philosophy? Does he help with it more? All very possible. Though Kirby smart is one of the highest paid assistants. He Runs the defense and has been able to learn under on of the best, for a long time, at different places. Question will still remain, who's defense is it>?
3. The greatest question and probably most important is "WHO" he hires has DC, OC and all of his assistants. Especially the OC, being a Defensive guy his whole career. This is what I am wanting to see.
4. Smart has a lot of experience, of the big game, learned from one of the best, He will be able to recruit some of the best defensive players in the nation, and hopefully develop them like we all wants kids to develop. Can he translate that to the other coaches and or kids to make us better?
I will agree its hard to be excited about a Non-proven head coach, but lets wait and see the staff he assemblies, and go from there. This also could be a Derrick Dooley hire where he makes the program itself better, but doesn't win ball games. In which case could make us the bad for years, or set us up better for many. (Still waiting to see at UT).
This also could be a Will Muschamp Hire..... Time will tell.

Ok first off you people are doing a terrible job of making me believe in K. Smart .
rkspeck.. I would not be completely opposed to hiring a coordinator. Every great HC was one at some point. That's not really what bothers me about this hire (assuming it happens). What concerns me is that he was a D Coord under Saban. I think we can all agree that he is the best coach in college football right now. He may be the devil, but he is the best. That being said, (and you highlighted my concern perfectly), we just don't know how much of that D is his vs Saban.
