Most of this is crap. Downtown is coming alive and if you and the wife arent having kids soon, a loft downtown may be great. Resales are thru the roof. Downtown bham is no more dangerous than any other Metro City. Stay our of ensley, etc, find a place on 2nd Ave N
If you have kids in school, you would likely have to send them to private school. The entire Birmingham school system is dysfunctional.
Here's the "etc." part you were talking about:
Find local businesses, view maps and get driving directions in Google Maps
I live in Hoover/Inverness, close to I-459 and 280. People complain about the traffic, but it takes me 30 minutes to get downtown at rush hour. If you can get on or off 280 west of The Summit, it's not bad. I love the convenience, too. My house is in the Hoover/Spain Park zone, which is very good if you have kids (didn't see you mention that). Lots of newer homes in my part of town. I wouldn't live anywhere else.
This is pretty dumb, audo. Every city (and I have lived in every part of the U.S. in my lifetime) has certain neighborhoods that are problematic. Downtown B'ham is not dangerous. I know people who live downtown as well as work downtown. And they love it. I work downtown five days a week and have no safety concerns.
There are few people on this board who probably will ever need to venture into the west end of B'ham, day or night. That's where the trouble is.
Birmingham gets a bad rap, but it has a lot of great qualities, too. And it's getting better all the time. (Hey, Finebaum's gone now - that counts for something, too! )
Trussville - good schools - moderate home prices
