I'm moving to Birmingham next week from the Huntsville, area. Can anyone offer any advice? What are some good areas to live? (im staying in a motel temporarily until my wife finds a job and joins me in B'ham, so i have plenty of time to look around. My new office is on Caraway Blvd but I'm an outside sales rep so I don't have to go to the office all that often ... Maybe once or twice per week. TIA!
South side of town. I grew up on the other side of town and it isn't a pretty place today.
"Over the mountain", i.e. Hoover, Vestavia, Cahaba Heights etc.
Dyin' ain't much of a living, boy - you know who
Homewood is nice and pretty convenient to downtown.
i'd recommend Hoover, Homewood, or Trussville. All are great.
The best advice I can give is avoid living I the area west of 65 and south of 20/59. Actually, avoid all parts of Birmingham, except the area east of 65 and south of 20.
Other friendly Birmingham tidbits:
-If you need to go downtown at night, don standard kevlar flak jacket and concealable sidearm with hollow-point ammunition.
-Use the buddy system at all times.
-Run all red lights after 11 PM.
-Radio ahead to any destination that requires parking on the street or walking more than 100 yards. Arrange for rooftop sniper support on these approaches.
-The above applies to any extraction as well.
-If you see street signs for avenues named by letter, such as "Avenue H", or for Greek alphabet "Omega Avenue", do not fall below 20 mph under any circumstances. If stopping is absolutely necessary, a trunk (or truck bed) mounted .50-caliber (12.7 mm NATO) water-cooled BMG should be manned for the duration of the stop.
-The above protocol applies any time you have a possible visual on Legion Field.
Welcome to Birmingham!
On a related topic, I may be moving to Montgomery to take a job down there, are there any good tips on where to live in Montgomery. I am currently not married and have no kids. Just need a nice place for a mid 20s single dude.
Lots of good apts off of Atlanta Highway, I would shoot for the east side of town if you can afford it. Taylor Road, Vaughn Road areas..
Dalraida isn't bad, I have a house there.. There are also small sections of near downtown that aren't bad, (Old Cloverdale), but you should be careful still.
PM me if you want more details about the city. Been here my whole life. (Millbrook, Prattville, Montgomery)
"Get in where you fit in." Life is, Too Short TL;DR
Long story short. I'd need to live within Montgomery County,
Taylor and East part of Vaughn. There are some newer places off the bypass down near where Best Buy and where Guitar center are also. You have to kind of pay a premium in Montgomery as far as apartments go if you want to stay away from a lot of the bad element there. 24 homicides in 5 months speaks pretty loudly.
I just moved from Bham and the only areas I would recommend is Homewood, Cahaba Heights/Vestavia, and Crestline/Mountain Brook. The reason, the school systems. You will pay more than other areas, but you will also sell you house if you need to. Look at the average time for the sale of homes for the areas. Also look at the average crime rate and types of crime. Look at the top public schools in the state. All will point towards the areas mentioned above.
Homewood would be my top recommendation. Good luck.
Let there be no doubt, I am indeed a proud Pop!! War Eagle!!
Get a P.O. Box in Montgomery, move to Auburn and commute. Montgomery is not a good place to live with kids or solo for that matter.
Your post didn't mention anything about kids, but you'll do well, if you want to buy, to do so in an area that has good schools. I would suggest Homewood, Vestavia, or Mountain Brook. I lived in Vestavia for five years and Homewood for seven years before moving to Auburn. Both were good. Take some time to really look at the different areas and what type of house/condo/apartment you want. Also do look to the future with respect to what you'd like to do.
We live in Hoover and LOVE it! Would also recommend Vestavia, Mountain Brook, Trussville. All of these have good schools.....
I live in the Gardendale area. Great small town and community. Its only about 15-20 minutes to Birmingham. The traffic is not bad at all on this part of town. Just a thought.
I have a house I am trying to sell in Montgomery. PM me if you are interested.
watch all episodes of first 48 if you see a street sign write it down and avoid it at all cost
HOORAH WAR DAMN EAGLE!!
Over the mountain areas including Mtn Brook, where I live, or Vestavia and Homewood are most convenient to downtown. Hoover is nice too. Mtn Brook has the best schools in the state. Exceptional and small.
