It was unfortunate, but it was a rule that regardless of how you left the field, you could not return to the field. Rule changed the following season. Missing a wide open receiver on the fake FG did not help either.
Nebraska, in 1980, blew out AU at Jordan Hare and the score could have been worse.
the point is he did not leave the field. the ref that ruled that he did was on the other side of the field! the ref on top of the play let him run and signaled a touchdown.
I believe that was in 1982 because I was there and the score was 41-7.
One of the worst losses in Auburn history was in 1980 and was when we played Tennessee. It was the third game of the season and Auburn was showcasing its new
west upper deck. Tennessee won the game 42-0 and that finished Doug Barfield as head
coach at Auburn. Even he knew the ride was over at the end of the season.
There were so many with Tuberville, I can't name them all. One that sticks in my crawl was
the 2006 Georgia game. This is the only time I wanted to boo at the end of the game,
however I didn't. Georgia came in with a 3 game losing streak and all we had to do was
to win and beat Alabama and we would go to the SEC championship game. What did we
do? We were embarrassed and the game was over at halftime. My only fun was after the
game when I saw a Georgia fan and we exchanged pleasantries and I asked him if he was
glad he came to the game. He smiled in a big way and we had a wonderful ten minute
conversation. That meeting helped to soothe my hurt pride.
South Florida in 2007. Inexcuseable.
Wasn't it Richmond also in the same year? Barfield's last season.....
We didn't know it at the time, but the 20-7 home loss to Texas in 1983 killed a national championship.
I've got too much Auburn in me to act like bammer trash.
You grad, bro?
Man did I ever hate hearing "Tiffen by a toe" crap. Thanks for opening old wounds. HAHA
I remember listening to that one on the radio. It was a horrible loss, no question about it.
