Looking Back: Auburn's 2002 Recruiting Class Part 1

  • 1. Ben Obamanu(Selma, AL) * * * * * WR
Obomanu was rated a five star and the 32nd best player of the 2002 Rivals100. Ben proved worthy of his ranking, finding himself on the All-SEC Team twice over his Auburn career. Obomanu caught 18 touchdown passes in his years as a Tiger, which is good for 2nd in school history. He went on to have a successful NFL career for the Seahawks and was recently voted to the Auburn All-Decade Team.
    Rating: A-

    2. T.J. Jackson(Opelika, AL) * * * * DT
Coming out of Auburn's backyard, TJ was rated the 14th best DT in the nation out of high school. Jackson had a good career with Auburn. He was 1st Team All SEC in 2004 with 51 tackles and 7.5 TFLs and 2nd Team All SEC in 2005. He had 29 career TFL's for Auburn. Jackson is currently an NFL free agent.
    Rating: A

    3. Justin Bruce(Lindale, Georgia) * * * * TE
Bruce, a four star, came to Auburn as the 12th best tight end in the 2002 class. Despite the hype, Bruce never played a down for Auburn. As soon as he arrived on campus he was told some crushing news. Doctors had found some big problems with Justin's neck area. This made it too risky for the 6 foot 9 incher to play football. Despite the blow, Bruce went on the finish out his degree and became a counselor.
    Rating: D

    4. Tre Smith(Venice, FL) * * * * RB
The speedster out of Venice was the 21st best running back in the 2002 class. Smith had an okay career at Auburn. He will always be known as the Plan D back that shredded the Tide's #1 ranked rushing defense in the 2002 Iron Bowl. Smith ran for almost 1,000 yards for the Tigers and now plays in the CFL for the Hamilton Tiger Cats.
    Rating: C+

    5. Brandon Cox(Trussville, AL) * * * * QB
Cox, a three year starter for Auburn, was the 9th best quarterback coming out of high school. He had a decent Tiger career. He wasn't the most talented QB, but was the quarterback for the most winningest class in Auburn history. Cox was up and down for the most of his four year tenure, but managed to defeat rival Alabama three straight times. Brandon is currently a clinical oncology account manger in Atlanta.
    Rating: B

    6. Montae Pitts(Loachapoka, AL) * * * * ATH
Once a Tennessee commit, the 84th best player in the 2002 class decided to sign with Auburn. You might call him the bust of the class. Pitts had two less than average seasons for Auburn in 2004 and 2005. On June 24, 2006 Pitts was arrested in Tuskegee for drunk driving. He had an alcohol level almost twice the legal limit. Pitts transfered to Jacksonville State following the incident.
    Rating: F

    7. Devin Aromashodu(Miami, FL) * * * * WR
Aromashodu, the nation's 9th best receiver, pulled a signing day surprise when he comitted to Auburn over the in-state Gators. Aromashodu had a good carrer as Tiger, catching 9TD's and 1333 yards. He was a key component to 2004 National Championship team. Devin currently plays for the Minnesota Vikings.
    Rating: A-

    8. Doug Morris(Pensacola, FL) * * * * DE
Big Morris came to Auburn as the nation's 19 best defensive end. He didn't play a down for Auburn. The information is scarce, but Morris was booted off the team late into the 2002 season for team violations.
    Rating: F

    9. Marcus McNeill( Ellenwood, GA) * * * * OT
The 315 pounder came to Auburn as the nation's 10 best tackle. McNeill arguably had the most successful career out of anyone in the class and is considered one of the best offensive lineman in school history. Marcus was a two time All American in college and was named to the Sporting News All-Decade Team. He's now a two time Pro Bowler in the NFL.
    Rating: A+

    10. Brandon Williams(Columbus, GA) * * * * DB
Williams was the 24th best DB in the 2002 class and was an early Auburn commit. Williams also never played a down for the Tigers. After redshirting his freshman season, Williams transfered to a smaller school.
    Rating: F

    11. Courtney Taylor(Carrollton, AL) * * * ATH
Taylor, the 33rd rated ATH in the 2002 class, picked the Tigers over the Tide on signing day. Taylor has successful career at Auburn. He won All- SEC Honorable Mention in 2004 and broke the school record for receptions with 153. Courtney was a reliable wide out for the 2004 National Championship team and went in the 6th round of the NFL draft to the Seahwaks. Taylor currently plays in the CFL for the BC Lions.
    Rating: A

    12. Wesley Hill(Cordele, GA) * * * QB
Hill arrived at Auburn as the nation's 28th best quarterback. Hill never saw the field and left Auburn after the 2004 season.
    Rating: D

    13. Brian Kuhn(Lake Como, FL) * * * DE
Kuhn arrived at Auburn as the nation's 31st ranked defensive end. During summer practice it appeared Kuhn wasn't at the college level and he quit the team before the start of the season.
    Rating: F

    14. Tyrone Martin(Alex City, AL) * * * LB
Martin came to the Plains as the nation's 34th best linebacker after chosing the Tigers over Florida on signing day. Martin was supposed to help the Auburn's linebacker depth right away but only played one game for the Tigers. Martin was forced to redshirt his due to a neck injury. Team doctors wouldn't clear Martin for the 2003 season, so he tranfered to Miles College.
    Rating: D-

    15. Antwarn Franklin(Woodlawn, Al) * * * DT
Franklin committed to Auburn in the 2000 recruiting process, but failed to qualify. Instead of enrolling in a JUCO, Franklin stayed at home to work on grades. Franklin then failed to qualify a second time. Antwarn finally enrolled at Auburn in February 2002. All the hard work and a feel good story was ruined when Franklin was kicked off the team for violating team rules in November of 2002.
