Auburn needs a disciplinarian in the worst way possible. If you don't think so, go read Heath Evans interview again. I just don't think Gus has it in him to be that tough nosed disciplinarian. I mean look at the players he recruited.... Dyer, Pike, Goodwin, etc. He recruits thugs no matter what the risk. You can say, "Well no one knew about Dyer's problems before he got to Auburn" and that's true. But Gus damn sure knew about them when he accepted Dyer with open arms at Ark State. You want the players running the program? By all means, hire Gus Malzahn.
Also, why do we want to go down the same road we just came out of? By that I mean hiring a good coordinator that really isn't proven as a head coach. All these people that are against Petrino for being a one track mind offensive coach are the same ones calling for Malzahn....Explain that to me? Malzahn's defense is giving up 392 ypg, about 40 yards less than ours....
I like Malzahn as a OC and as a guy, but to think he is Auburn's answer is mind-blowing to me.
Bottom line: Auburn needs a disciplinarian and we need him now.
I was going to put a witty joke here, but I forgot bama fans still use picture books. So I thought I'd expedite the process for you...
I DON'T want Gus.... We have to get a much better hire this time.
"I've seen some coaches lose with good players. I haven't seen anybody win without them." Rhett Lashlee
I wonder if Gus were OC this year, would Chizik have been fired midsession?
I think yes
"you're so vain, I'll bet you think this post is about you, don't you? Don't you?"
Alabama delenda est.
I appreciate your point on discipline. My understanding is that Gus has a weakness for believing he can help the trouble kids. Let’s not forget that most of the college players fall into this category. Given that, here are the things I think would be different / better this year and next year, if Gus were / is our HC:
1/ Our QB situation would not be an issue under his system and coaching
2/ He was involved with recruiting most of the players on our current roster. These guys are built for his system and will play for him.
3/ It will take less time to “rebuild” our program with Gus.
4/ We might actually be able to score some points and win a game.
5/ He has done a very respectable job at Arky St. this year. 7-3 overall and 5-1 in conference.
6/ We could realistically be 8-2 this year with Gus as HC.
I do not see Gus as the risk others do. He has won everywhere he has been. I will give Jimbo a slight edge in my favorites, but Gus is a very close second.
The wheels on the bus go 'round and 'round.
