Please post ITT on if you did or did not say to yourself right after the announcement of the Gene Chizik hiring, "Yes sir! We are about to recruit lights out with Chiz!"
I would agree that when Chizik was hired I had no reason to believe he would be a strong recruiter. In fact at the time I recall fans of other SEC schools indicating that Chizik would have a tough time recruiting with his losing record coming from ISU. I do recall when hired Chizik indicated that he wanted to assemble an assistant coaching staff of very strong recruiters. Overall I think he accomplished his goal as to the strong recruiters. At this point strong doubts about having the right staff and leadership to develop these recruits and have everyone in the program pulling in the same direction.
So yeah I know where you are going with this. If Chizik and staff can recruit then Pentrino and staff can as well. I think there is some truth to this particulary if our DC has an NFL background like Van Gorder. Of course as of now Chizik is our coach and we don't have an opening.
I will also say that while Petrino has a spotty record Saban was also mauled by the media coming into Tuscaloosa for the way he left Miami. Also Saban had never stayed anyplace 5 years, etc. etc. Job hopper, no loyalty, blah blah. But at the end of the day we all know Saban was/is able to recruit at Bama.
For the record I am on the fence on the Petrino thing at the moment. My main goal is at least to see the AD replaced soon.
