Yesterday's run was amazing, but here is the real story...
Over the past 4 games here are Cam Newton's stats...
Passing - 72 completions on 119 attempts (60.5% completion rate) with 8TDs and ZERO INTs (in past six games he has thrown only 2 INTs)
Rushing - 41 carries for 287 yards (7.0 yard average) and 3 TDs...
Yes the doubters will say their record is 4-9...but 7 of those losses were by 6, 2, 4, 5, 1, 6 and 6 points...
I agree. Their record is more of a reflection on the bad defense, much more so than Cam's performance.
The doubters aren't doubting about his talent. It's about his mental toughness and how mopey he is after games. A leader isn't supposed to be moping around in interviews and what not. I think his problem is that he has never really lost and doesn't know how to deal with it. He was on a State Championship Football Team in highschool, he was on the undefeated UF team, he lost 1 game at Blinn, undefeated at Auburn .....And now he is on a crappy team.
He has to get some mental toughness about him because there are starting to be reports about his teammates being unhappy with the mopey demeanor.
I was going to put a witty joke here, but I forgot bama fans still use picture books. So I thought I'd expedite the process for you...
Don't discount at all that the football pundits said he's been lucky and couldn't play QB - that he wouldn't throw for an even decent completion percentage, that he would force throws and have too many INTs...
They doubted he had the talent to play QB at a high level in the NFL just a month ago...

Watch out. You'll get hit w down votes for talking the truth. At least I did in a thread yesterday. Cam is a superstar no doubt about it. He just needs to act like it or he's gonna be labeled a C Johnson or T Owens. As he matures, and hopefully the Panthers upper management figure out he can't do it all on his own, he'll start to come around. I hope so anyways.
Run to the Hills! Run for your lives! We Comin'!!! WDE!
But again...everything they have doubted has been about his head and his attitude and his leadership.
I love Cam, but the truth is, he's still a kid in a lot of ways. It shows in his joy of winning and playing the game when it's fun, but it also shows in his immaturity when he losses and takes some personal criticism, and suddenly the game isn't fun anymore.
That's just the truth with him right now. He'll continue to get better physically as a QB, but his ceiling will be his mental toughness unless he matures. This year has presented a lot opportunity for him to learn and grow....lots of freak things have happened to cost them close games.
And their defense hasn't be good, but it's better than last year. The offense, though, has dropped from 7th to 23rd in scoring average from last year to this year. They've lost three games in which the defense held the opponent under 20 points, and a win came in part because they held Washington to 13 points. So while the defense hasn't helped, it's the offense that has taken the giant step backwards that has cost them games this year.
