Older than most but my first memory of Auburn was attending the 1957 Game between Auburn and Kentucky at Cliff Hare Stadium in Auburn when I was 15 years old with my father. This was just the third the game of the year and Auburn won 6-0. Did not know that it was going to be such a magical season but what a defense Auburn had. It was one of the most hard fought games I have ever seen. Auburn had a number of great players as most Auburn fans know but Kentucky had only one. To this day, I have never seen anyone play as great of game as Lou Michaels did that day against Auburn. He was an All American defensive tackle but he played Offense also. In addition, he kicked off, would have kicked field goals and extra points and I thnk punted also. It seemed he made every tackle Kentucky made that day. If my memory is correct, Auburn's lone touchdown came after Lou Michaels hit him with the most vicious forearm I have ever seen. Tommy Lorino was knocked several yards toward the stands and as I recalled had to be attended to (may not have been but I have never seen anyone hit so hard). Auburn was driving at the time and the long penalty put them near the goal line and they the scored the only touchdown of the game. Auburn had a lot of outstanding players and All Amnericans but Lou Micheals stood out because he was basically a one man team that day. What a game and what a memory!!!
Being in my grandparent's house in Guntersville, AL and always seeing a framed Auburn picture in the living room (I now have that picture in my game room) and watching my grandfather scream at the tv during Iron Bowls.
"you're so vain, I'll bet you think this post is about you, don't you? Don't you?"
