The thread on the best recruiters got me thinking. What are we really getting out of Curtis Luper? When is the last time we got a bigtime recruit from the Mobile area?
Nero, Leff, Sigler, Niles, and Dismukes are all from down there. But is that a Luper problem? Or is it a "Mobile goes to Alabama" problem? Hasn't this been an issue for a long time?
Didn't Nick Fairley also come from Mobile?
I played against Mike McNeil from Davidson
And looking back to 2002, it looks like we've only gotten three 4-star commits out of Mobile prior to 2010. Luper has gotten two in the last three years.
His name is also attached to Jovon Robinson, Tre Mason, Michael Dyer, Cam Newton, and Trovon Reed.
So, "what are we getting out of Curtis Luper?".....Cam Newton and Michael Dyer = National Championship, Mason, Robinson, and Reed could be apart of another run.

Yeah but he was a 3-star offensive lineman.
Yeah, he, Sen'Derrick Marks, and Gabe McKenzie were the only 4-stars to go to Auburn in the eight years from 2002 to 2009.

Only two of those had bammer offers. Also, Fairley originally committed to Tuberville's staff.
The day the NCAA released Alabama from the repeat violator window, was the last day that Auburn had success in Mobile.
Jobs, Cars, Coaches finder fees, you name it, this day began the "Business as Usual" era AGAIN for Alabama recruiting in Mobile.

Marks was not close to a four-star.
I didn't list Fairley, he was a 3-star.
Eight years before Luper Auburn got three 4-star players from there. He has gotten two in three years. That at least seems like an improvement.
And you didn't answer my question. Is this a Luper problem or is it a culture challenge in that Mobile people, coaches, and therefore Mobile players, tend to be raised Alabama fans?
I was thinking he was a 2-star, and only got an offer from Tuberville when Tubs saw him playing basketball.
But he came up a 4-star when I looked on Rivals. Not sure why.
And that actually helps make the point that it's not really a Luper problem. It means Auburn landed two 4-star players in 8 years and Luper has done that in three years.
There is no doubt the deck is severely stacked against AU in that area. If we are going to continue to recruit there it is the job of any AU coach that recruits there to overcome/change it.
Saban knew the Mobile routine when he was at LSU. I would say the preachers and churches are doing well in the Bay area.
