It appears somewhat possible that Auburn will be ranked #2 nationally going into the 2010 Iron Bowl. (However, my inside sources advise that Associated Press is considering eliminating Auburn from this week's voting as a result of what Moscow newspapers are calling "the Cam Newton - Barack Obama scandal".)
Only once before in Iron Bowl history has Auburn been ranked #2 for the game. That was in 1958, and Auburn won 14-8. (However, sources report that the NCAA is considering vacating that Auburn win because Milton McGregor told John Bond that he sold programs that day at Legion Field as a 10-year-old.)
Two of Auburn's significant Iron Bowl wins have come against Alabama teams which were ranked #2 going into the game, in 1972 and 1989. Both outcomes may be under review at present.
In 1972 Auburn blocked two Alabama punts in the fourth quarter to win 17-16 over the #2 Tide. (Anonymous sources advise that Auburn defensive back David Langner, who scored both touchdowns, was wearing a sun visor over his helmet that day and thus violated rule 347.d.37 concerning team uniforms. These dependable sources advise that the SEC office is reviewing such a complaint, allegedly filed last month by one Kenny Rogers on behalf of Greg Gantt, John Hannah, and Cecil Hurt.)
In 1989, in the first Iron Bowl game played at Auburn, the #2 Crimson Tide was defeated 30-20. It has been widely speculated that Auburn had 12 men on the field for their first touchdown. Our review of game video appears to confirm that as incontrovertible fact. Without a source this time, we advise our readers on our own that the 1989 game's outcome will probably be reversed by the FBI.
PM, PM, PM, PM, IS THIS TRUE, PLEASE RESPOND IMMEDIATELY, TELL US IT'S GONNA BE OK!!
I liked the visor comment about Langner. Here's a trivia question reguarding a visor. Who is the only Auburn player (and to my recollection there was only one) that wore a tennis visor over his helment for punt returns?
"Always remember that Goliath was a 40-point favorite over Little David." Shug Jordan
This is a good one, and a needed laugh, for this morning!
That would be Mike Fuller, I do believe...on the visor question.
