Auburn...a family tradition since 1905

First off, Petrino was never going to be considered seriously. Not necessarily because of Jacobs, but someone higher in the organization. Secondly, I don't know for sure that Dye has his hands in this, but it certainly smells that way. He has not been reticent about his admiration for Smart and his son is Kirby's agent.
That said, I can get behind the Smart hire. As Phillip has said, most of the top coaches in the country right now came directly to their current jobs from a coordinator position. Smart is as good a coordinator as is out there, so one would have to like his chances of being successful. Still, it's always a crapshoot.
Again, the only thing, in the end, that upsets me is the APPEARANCE that the old guard is still pulling the strings. I would love to see Jay shown the door. Fine man, but not 21st century AD material, IMHO. And Coach Dye, although I appreciate everything he did for Auburn, needs to concentrate on his Japanese maples, tell Finebaum to kiss his ass and leave Auburn alone.
Finally - and most disconcertingly - if we hire Kirby Smart and it DOESN'T work out, we are looking, I fear, at ramifications far beyond football. Unfortunately, the tail sometimes does wag the dog. The Gogue presidency may rest on this decision. Failure could result in turmoil throughout the university.
WDE always and forever!
Chad Morris would be a big mistake. Out of the guys at the top of the list that have been mentioned, he is the weakest in my opinion. Sure, he's effective in the ACC so far. Furthermore, when Clemson hits a good defense they tend to fall apart. Morris would also be the underwhelming hire we all fear. That would not be a good move by Auburn at all.
