A very good friend of mine who is one of the most respected basketball coaches at the D2 level attended a breakfast held in Huntsville yesterday. He respects all sports and basically likes both Auburn and Alabama, but probably favors Alabama slightly. This friend of mine is of extremely high character and has strong Christian values. In fact this breakfast was meant to recognize Christian leadership in sports.
2 of the main guests/speakers were the team chaplains for Auburn and Alabama, Chette Williams and Jeremiah Castille, respectively. They took turns answering a variety of questions, some related to their associations with the football teams and some did not. At one point they were told that they would have about 1 min to prepare to answer the same question regarding the head coaches at their respective universities.
Question- tell the audience 2 things about your head football coach that might come as a surprise to most.
Chette went first and said the following:
1. I would absolutely without a doubt want my son to play for Coach Chizik if he ever has the chance to play college football.
2. Gene Chizik is without question the Godliest man I know. Chette went on to say that per Chizik's request, there is a weekly bible study for all of the coaches. In addition, there is a weekly players bible study. If Chette is ever absent, Chizik himself leads the bible studies. Chette spoke of all of the kind, generous and Christlike things that Chizik does on a daily basis.
I'm thinking wow...
Now the mike turns to Jeremiah. Keep in mind that he had quite a bit of extra preparation time since Chette spoke for a good while about Chizik.
Jeremiah said the following :
1. After a very long pause, and a few false starts, he said "Coach Saban has a very good sense of humor." With no more elaboration on this point, he moved to his second which he even looked less prepared for.
2. "Coach Saban is ummh, ummh very smart."
I'm thinking wow again...but for very different reasons.
I am so proud of the man that represents Auburn University's football program. He takes heat when his players behave like knuckleheads, and that comes with the territory of being in his position. But in my opinion, I think he is doing more for these young men and for Auburn University as well as the community of Auburn than most people realize. Hats off to Coach Chizik!

Chette Williams was a guest speaker at my church several years ago. He is one of the most kind and sincere men I've ever had the pleasure of meeting...so much so that his endorsement of our coach is good enough for me with no additional evidence necessary. Nice post!
Regardless of the score, we always win with a man of GCs integrity. I'll take the honor of his character over anything else.
By the way, I trust this article comes as no surprise to anyone.
I am not the least bit surprised by this.....
Not surprised in the least. Got to know Chette's family decently well during my days at AU. He's the same man at home with his family as he is in public. He's the real thing.
Auburn from day one.
The Auburn Football program is in good hands as long as Gene Chizik is there. Regardless of ANY problem that might rear it's ugly head..
Nice timing for this post. I think we could all stand a reminder that, even though we all love football, theres something bigger here.
I couldn't agree more with your last statement. Thanks for posting. WE for Chette!
The wheels on the bus go 'round and 'round.
I joined this site to keep up with the football team but honestly I enjoy posts like this one more then those about football. Thanks for sharing.

I've always said I was proud that we had a coach that cared as much if not more about our young men and their lives off the field than the 60 minutes they spent on it. I've also had the honor of meeting Brother Chette and speak with him--he is the real deal. If you ever have the chance to read his book, I highly recommend it.
I'm not suprised. When it comes to CGC I expect it. He has character and integrity...some traits that not all successful HCs have.
And Chette, although I've never had the pleasure of meeting, must be a good man the way the $puat fans continually trash him.
I believe Castile has no official affiliation with UA. Saban pushed him out, to his own foundation. He was replaced by an elderly white man, when they started their smear campaign against Chette. They couldn't try to ruin Chette's reputation, feeding garbage to the NYT, when they modeled their own system after Auburn's. I actually put Castille on the spot, on the air about 4 years ago. They had advertised him as the team chaplain for a week. He took calls and I asked him point blank, if he was team chaplain and if he worked for the university. He said Saban replaced him, but he was still a confidant for the players. They have the man below listed now. Kind of favors a tree killer.

Not at all surprised yet I am so glad to be reminded just how blessed we are at AU to have Coach Chizik as our coach and Chette Williams as the chaplain for these young men. What a great post ... much appreciated. Thank you for sharing!
That is awesome. I want Chette to get back and have a heart to heart with RD.
I hope the weekly bible studies won't be cause for us to lose a guy like van gorder or prevent us from getting other top coaching prospects in the future. I can understand why you would offer an opportunity for bible study for the players but why would he feel the need to do that for adults? I wouldn't want to feel pressured to participated in something like that in my job.
I doubt that Chiz requires it....more of an optional thing.
