COACHSPEAK is a regular feature after each practice. Today, it features head coach Gus Malzahn
On Wednesday’s practice
“It was one of our normal practices. This was probably the first time I wasn’t pleased with the attitude, effort or approach to practice. We are at the mid-point of spring. We are going to get that corrected, and I think the players understand that. We should see improvement as far as execution the second half of the spring.
“I don’t think it had anything to do with the break. If anything, we should have been fresher. It was really good today, because we’ll find out how we respond next practice.”
On moving Robenson Therezie to Star position
“He’s a very good athlete. We are just trying to find a way to get him on the field.”
On last Saturday’s scrimmage
“We improved greatly. The effort, I thought, overall was very good. We still have deficiencies and we still have a long way to go, but we improved. As a coach, you want to keep improving and we didn’t do it today.”
On Trent Fisher playing with the first team at safety
“We are mixing and matching some guys with the ones and the twos. We haven’t made any decisions about any starter at any position right now. Sometimes you want to see how a guy responds with the first group that goes out there.”
On how three junior college transfers are progressing
“I think they are getting in a routine, getting more comfortable. They have a chance to probably show the biggest improvement the second half of spring.”
On how QB’s Kiehl Frazier and Jonathan Wallace performed in the scrimmage
“When everybody was doing what they should around them, I thought they did a very solid job. The big thing for us is protecting the football. It’s going to be easier to evaluate them the second half. The execution around them should be better.”
On running back Tre Mason’s injury
“Nothing serious. A little banged up. There is no doubt. We want to make sure he’s 100 percent healthy. He’s a little bit ahead of others as far as knowing the offense, so it’s probably good they are getting the work.”
On defensive tackle Angelo Blackson’s injury
“Nothing too serious.”

What??? A practice that wasn't good? When was the last time we heard that?
Realistic practice evaluations are greatly appreciated.

This coach is not going to give an inch when it comes to asking the team to perform. I love it!! No sugar coated false positive statements about how the team is working hard. They didn't perform up to expectations and he called them on it. That will make a difference come fall. Great work coach and great reporting PM.
