“You know what school would cost here for non-state guy? Over $200,000 for room, board and everything else,” Stoops said. “That’s a lot of money. Ask the kids who have to pay it back over 10-15 years with student loans. You get room and board, and we’ll give you the best nutritionist, the best strength coach to develop you, the best tutors to help you academically, and coaches to teach you and help you develop. How much do you think it would cost to hire a personal trainer and tutor for 4-5 years?
“I don’t get why people say these guys don’t get paid. It’s simple, they are paid quite often, quite a bit and quite handsomely.”

Yep. There is not NFL for 99% of drafted players without their time developing in college. There is a dramatically different job out look for 99% of undrafted players without their educations.
I am about to say something i never thought i would....But Bob you got it right sir.
The way they act is liek they are being violated. If you truly feel that way then drop the scholly and pay your own way. I will list what they get and dont have to pay. And then they slap the school in the face with the you are exploiting me line....BULL HOCKEY!!
Free tuition for four to five years
Room and board
Use of the weight facilities
Free interviews with any and all NFL teams
Free sporting events all around campus
What everyone else gets for free-
Crickets! If they can catch them.
Air to breath
Use of the lavatory
But they want to get paid. And act like they are being exploited.
I dont go to AU football games for the players on teh team. I went when we were awful and I have gone when we are amazing. I dont go to cheer on one guy. I go to cheer on my School. It is a privialage not afforded to meny in teh world to get a free education. Its not a right. If they start paying players. Then they should subtract that amount from what they are getting for free. IE we pay you $1000 a month...You cant eat on campus for free anymore.
This topic really gets me. I had to pay my own way. My wife had her folks to pay her way through. But inthe end we still payed more than any athelte and we were not afforded the exposure in our prospective field of study, as to get a job by getting a minimum of 48 free job interviews.
Like I said. I agree with Bob.
If you cant be honest....whats the point of being anything?
I don't agree at all. These student athletes are restricted in being able to get jobs and earn more money if they need it. Also the top academic students that are on scholarships are given very big stipends so they should be treated the same and they can go get any job they want without restrictions. I would like to remove some restrictions on athletes as far as how they can earn additional money that way schools wont have to come out of pocket for anything extra.
Earning money is one thing. But tell me how you would police that?
Johnny Golden arm gets a job at the local car dealership. He gets a new ride, and gets paid for doing nothing. And then when Booster Mcwhatshisname comes in and drops $1500 in the kids pocket what cen be done about it?
That acedemic kid that is getting the job would never get that. There are way too many pitfalls in that situation that creat the slipperiest of slopes. The boosters already slap a hundy high five on most kids..then they would have unlimited access.... and that spell s trouble! Deep trouble.
I agree its no doubt a slippery slope but there are some simple ways to allow these kids to earn money without the university having to spend more money on them. Maybe allow them to sale their tickets at market value instead of face value....as a student at AU i did this all the time. Also these kids talent allows more doors to be open to them than normal student as well as the top academic student would have more opportunities than most normal students...Im not sure there is a way to ever stop a booster who wants to pay a kid in cash under the table. I just think the NCAA can come up with smarter ways for athletes to be able to earn if they want to just seems un-American to restrict someone who wants to legally earn money outside of the sports they play.
I agree. What could be possible is having them employed by the University in jobs that relate to their field of study in the classroom. IE- If you are a marketing major you work for the unviersity marketing dept. And then you are now trackable.
I have always said they should let the kids have jobs. I just cant find a way to do it without big huge loop holes.
Hey, you shut your mouth about Johnny Goldenarm!
Geddy Golden Fingers works better for you??
