If you saw the video of Gus' reception arriving in Auburn tonight, that is what many people in Madison, WI wish they could have done to send Bielema off. I live up here. People were ready for him to go. Yes, he went to 3 Rose Bowls, but this year is by default and he lost the other two. Gary Patterson outcoached him in the TCU game in 2010. Gus will outcoach Brett's pants off. This is also the same guy who said at this year's Big 10 media days- "we don't want to be like the SEC in any way shape or form". He left because he's scared of Urban Meyer. AuCpa you are dead wrong on this one.
I'm not saying Wisconsin is the new Ohio State, but if you scoff at what Bielema has done there, I can't really believe you follow college football outside of the SEC very closely.
Wisconsin has eight 10-win seasons in their history....FOUR of them have come in the last seven years under Bielema. Since 2006, when he took over, Wisconsin has the 11th best record in football.
Now you can start taking shots at the Big Ten, or that they "backed in to their third Rose Bowl" this year. But at the school he was at, with the players he had, in the conference in which he competed, he did very, very well. He was at a Big Ten school in the Big Ten.
It's not like he was coaching at Florida while playing in the Big Ten. He was at Wisconsin. And he won A LOT.
Don't check his recruiting classes, but check the NFL draft since 2007. They have sent 22 players to the draft...which compares favorably with 27 from Alabama, 20 from Auburn, etc.
I don't know what he'll do at Arkansas, because you just never know. Johnny Majors won a national title in 1976 at Pitt, then lost fewer than 3 games in a year only four times in 16 seasons at Tennessee. Then he went back to Pitt and sucked.
You just never know. But if you can't look at what Bielema did at Wisconsin and realize he's a pretty darn good coach...well, I don't know what to tell you.
And Deav....I think you're Wisconsin friends who think they are glad to see him go did what lots of fan bases do....they get spoiled and forget who they used to be. With their history and location, they are one wrong coach away from being Indiana for the next 20 years.
They are 7-6 this year and I think they lost both Rose Bowl appearances, I know TCU beat them.
ON TO VICTORY - STRIKE UP THE BAND
8-5 in the weak 10 playing smash mouth football. Please wake me when I Love Lucy comes on.
Dive for the thrill, shoot for the kill.
Seriously? I would have puked my guts out if we had hired the guy from Wisconsin.
"Red headed road rash" alliteration FTW
Performance stands out like a ton of diamonds. Nonperformance can always be explained away.
When it comes down to looks, I think Bielema fits well Arkansas. No matter what you say about his coaching, "porcine" is an adjective that you can easily apply to him.
I wouldn't trade Gustav for 5 Ennimas!.
What is your point then? Don't be jealous of their coaching hire if you would not want him at Auburn. I would be sick to my stomach if we had hired him over Gus or Kirby or anyone else we were looking at to be our coach. So they got a "big name." So what? He is going to take a team set up for wide open offense and try to convert it to three yards and a cloud of dust. Sounds like someone we just fired. Good luck with that. Have fun winning the presser. I'll take wins on the field.
