2004 Auburn Tigers Pave the Way for SEC

  • I just had to get this off my mind. Has anybody noticed that since Auburn went undefeated 2004, won the 2004 SEC Championship, and then defeated Virgina Tech in their bowl game it paved the way for the SEC to be the automatic qualifier for the National Championship. From that time, even if a SEC team loses one game and wins the SEC Championship (exept for Alabama they are special) they are automatically given a shot at the NC. The BSC voted Auburn out of NC game only to allow Oklahoma to get the snot kick out of them by USC. Since this time, the SEC has had the opportunity to qualify for a chance to win the NC. I am new to the AUC but just thought I would say something that has been on my mind for a while! WAR EAGLE!

  • Agree. I always tell my fellow SEC friends this in arguments. Also always believed if Bama would have been ranked that year we would have got in. Instead the last week of regular season we were playing a bad bama team. Since that time on I always thought better for both schools for other team to be great! I also get tired of Bammers crying that they were on probation. We are Auburn and back down from NOONE so I prefer Updyke U to be undefeated when we BEAT the breaks off em!

First of all I would like to say I agree with you, However Auburn would have been Voted into the NC Game in 2004 if
Coach Tubs would have turned those guys loose and let them play. Not trying to knock TT, But he did like to get conservative after they got a ahead. They could have been one of the all time great offensive and defensive clubs of all time.

Likewise I predict based on LSU's performance (or lack of) in the NCG and the poor TV ratings, that the BCS will make it harder to have 2 teams from the same conference play each other.

This is why I had mixed feelings about Bama getting into the NC game. I always felt and still do that you should win your conference to get a chance to play in that game. But to see two SEC schools play in that game makes you realize that a SEC team will never get left out again (like Auburn in 2004).

Yep and if the bcs bastards do do the plus one I think we will see several all SEC title games...at least til that gets old for them/the country and they tweak it again! I do like the possibility of an IRON BOWL NC game! Could you imagine what that chaos would create in this already chaotic rivalry of ALL rivalries:)
