Commentary: Nobody’s Little Brother

  • Great info but I fail to see how you can suggest Tubs doomed our chances in 2004 by not doing well in 2003. Lots of team have won the NC after relatively poor records the previous season. I doubt very few voters considered our 2003 record when voting in 2004. A much more likely reason in 2004 is the media wanted Oklahoma vs. USC.

  • You missed about the Tide having 2009 as an undefeated season. But they had several in 2004. Never a "Little Brother" complex from this Tiger!

  • These stats just happen to nearly encompass my lifetime ('80), so no wonder I've never felt like we were bama's lb... I never quite understood any of that... Any bammer who thinks of Auburn as their little brother is probably still listening to disco because they never stopped.

  • Great article, Ron! We old folks need to remember that time has moved on, that kids want to know what is happening right now, and these statistics show that the programs have been mostly equal in the last thirty years. Anything prior to that can be precious to us, but really doesn't mean much to the next generation. My kids have always thought of the two state programs as equals, and looked up to Southern Cal and Florida as the premier programs as they went through high school. They now think of both the state programs more highly than FLA/SCal and I think that is really cool. IMHO

  • This story should be covered nationally........ESPN or another major sports network. Very well written with solid facts to back-up. Excellent writting, ejoyed the piece! You don't get these sorts of well backed stories very often! Thanks.

If you felt different on January 11th than you did on January 10th then perhaps you were somebody's little brother. I know this - I didn't. I also know this - Shug Jordan was never anybody's little brother. You obviously missed that part of Auburn history but men like Shug, my uncle, and my grandfather were never in any way anybody's little brother. And they were all around long before Pat Dye got a job at Auburn. Those men were always Auburn. Never a bammer, never a dawg, and never anything little.

I understand you were trying to do a great commentary on Auburn football. That's great. To imply even by accident that Shug was a little brother to anyone on or off the field is a lapse in Auburn raising somewhere along the way. I was raised in the generation just ahead of you and perhaps we were fortunate to be the last to truly understand the true history of Auburn's past and how proud we were of it.

The commentary, or actually a true journalistic story, is a response to the nations perception of auburn being a "little brother". Ron is not saying they were a "little brother" and now aren't, he's simply saying based on the numbers, Auburn has proven to be a powerhouse. It sounds to me that Ron does understand the history of Auburn. That's what's unique about Auburn.......the history is passed from generation to generation and isn't segmented like most universities.

I was reading through this thread, getting ready to write this exact same thing until I came to you post. To echo...

The article wasn't to say we actually were a little brother, or to imply we, as a fan base, FEEL like a little brother. But how you feel personally has no effect on national perception. I like the idea of pointing out unknown facts. People often ignorantly run with a perception without even really knowing why they think they way they do. By sharing the facts Ron shared, it can open the eyes of those who didn't know better. It's to correct them, not us.

  • Ron, I loved the article. I have been a long suffering, proud AU fan for 40+ years, but I did't realize just how well our record matched (and exceeded) Bama's and I appreciate you doing the research that makes us all even more proud. Go Tigers, War Eagle

Amen to the article. It is so good to see Coach Dye being included and recognized for his contributions to the Auburn legacy.

But let's not forget, Dye did a lot of damage to the Auburn legacy as well.

  • This was writing for the record and in MHO wins two for the record-the best in a long time and mighty fine in terms of fairness and class. Yeah, class. Bobby Lowder has been criticized brutally. Didn't he have a lot to do with the hire of Dye? Mr. Saunders, I really mean every word of this. It's not just exuberance over a national championship.
