Your assessment that Auburn has only been a powerhouse since '81 seems shortsighted considering we have many national championships we could claim from the early 1900's as well as a consensus national championship in the 50's. Other than that excellent article that I thoroughly enjoyed reading.

ND is a tough one to place. They have tons of money and tradition and NBC was stupid enough to cover every game under long term contract. What is their record against ranked opponents over the 15 years though and when have they really been relevant lately. Even the year they had Brady Quinn they had a good record but it was against nonranked teams. Miami is also over ranked using the criteria of winning over the long term like he uses on AU. Without the rapper and the ponzi scheme operator deeply involved in recruiting you really have to question whether their recruiting was super or just very good. Miami has spent thirty years winning but they still can't fill up their home stadium every game as opposed to Clemson who fills it up every game win or lose.
It is an interesting article, some schools have a football team and some have a football program. Some schools have had no real program but have had some teams that win consistently.

I enjoyed that. Its July reading for sure. That second tier is for teams who could sneak up and win it all without starting high in the rankings.

It wont be until the generation that lived through the glory days of Notre Dame passes the torch to our generation that we will see their image truly represent what they do on the field.
