  • I'm not a supporter of Petrino for two basic reasons:

    - He has a very average 15-13 record in SEC play. I think there are other coaches on the list that could do better.

    - I fear that his past misdeeds will haunt us in recruiting. Say what you want, it's more about Jimmies and Joes than Xs and Os, and if I'm a recruiter from another school, I'm making sure that Petrino's misdeeds are top-of-mind in any recruit's parents' heads.

If, as Jacobs said, money is truly no object, I say dangle the biggest check in the history of checks in front of Kevin Sumlin. If A&M outbids us, fine. Move along.

  • As long as the committee, meaning the whole committee and not just the head, backs the person chosen I will be willing to give the new coach a chance and will support him. I have faith in the individuals on the committee and believe they will recommend someone who will represent Auburn well and have the ability to pull the team back together and be competitive on the field. They are well aware of what it takes to compete in the SEC and deal with the other school across the state. Both Bo and Pat have seen the highs and lows with regard to competing with Alabama and know what it takes to be successful.

What do Petrino's former players have to say about him. Was he well liked? Was he an a$$hole? Discipline? etc.., I have not heard much talk from his former players.

Strong has excellent credentials and is a very good football coach. To even suggest that he be hired because of his race is an huge insult to him.

I think they just meant a minority coach would do well at Auburn in terms of recruiting and relating to the players. It's not the only reason they would consider hiring him. You guys are blowing this way out of proportion.

  • I read all the comments about winning being the bottom line. If winning is the bottom line, and Coach Petrino was a winner, then why is not coaching at Arkansas? If Arkansas fired him, why should Auburn hire him when nothing has happened in between? I find it hard to swallow that Auburn must sink to hiring the Arkansas cast-off. There are other good coaches out there. Why risk hiring Petrino? Also, there are those who think that offering Kevin Sumlin is a good idea. If Auburn is willing to put up enough cash to hire Sumlin, then they might want to think about offering Saban.

How could anyone be happy with Petrino??? He will split the fan base ten times worse than Chizik did when he arrived. If you are parents of a highly recruited player, would you want Petrino sitting in your living room? Would you want a guy who had an affair, lied about it, and destroyed his integrity and honor sitting in your living room representing Auburn? This is the same guy who bolted from the Atlanta Falcons (who by the way share many of the same southeastern fan base with Auburn) without even having a personal meeting with his players? The same guy who destroyed his career at Arkansas? Are we that desperate to "settle for" him when there are so many outstanding young coaches with integrity? Are you even kidding me that Petrino is at the top of the list? If Jacobs hires Petrino, he should be summarily fired and run off as soon as possible. Auburn is NOT a good fit for Bobby Petrino. He has a lot of restitution to make up for what he did at Arkansas and the Falcons. He needs to go coach in a lower level obscure league and rebuild his reputation (if that's possible) somewhere else besides Auburn. I'm just stunned he's being considered top tier. Amazing.

Bottom line: Winning will make all of that disappear.

Easy Chaz, we are electing a football coach not a pope. While I agree Petrino's off-field escapades are not acceptable behavior, we live in a society of second chances. His ability to put a quality team on the field has never been questioned. As far as recruiting goes, kids today care about two things...seeing the field as quickly as possible and getting to the next level. The guy is a proven winner everywhere he has coached at the college level. If you can win at Louisville and Arkansas big, think what you could do at a place that actually has a recruiting base! Petrino has never had NCAA troubles, unlike his personal life. I feel Auburn needs to take the risk. He may be a bad guy personally, but he is a hell of a football coach!!

His ability to put a quality team on the field is NOW being questioned? Why? Because he has a lot of baggage. I'm not a judgemental guy and I believe in second chances. BUT- not at Auburn. He needs to go to a lower level league and rebuild his reputation. We don't need to take the RISK associated with hiring him. How do you know he could recruit well now? What quality assistant coaches would want to work for him now? What kids we recruit would want to be around someone who is tainted by his previous job. Hiring a guy fired from Arkansas is a risk NOT worth taking. Auburn is not a "bottom feeder" school. We are top tier and should demand our coaches be beyond reproach.

Petrino is also known as a guy who runs a disciplined program (to as much of an extent as is possible these days). And as for the idea that Petrino's hire would split the fan base is absurd. The fan base couldn't have been more frractured than when they hired Chizik! But winning cures all ills. Hey, we would all like a coach who is a great guy and a strong family man...but the last time that happened, we finished 3-9, the NCAA was looking over our shoulder and the team was disinterested and split. And the coach just left town with $7.5 million dollars and a smile on his face.

Read the boards FedExRay and you'll see the fan base is already split over Petrino. You are thinking about Petrino PRE-SCANDAL. Sure he was a great coach. But now, what? Do you want him representing Auburn in a recruit's home versus Saban and Richt, Mushchamp, etc. Petrino is damaged goods today. Let him go repair his reputation somewhere else for four or five years. Then he can come back to the SEC. We are less than a year away from his firing at Arkansas. Restitution needs to be paid and not by giving him the Auburn HC job. I would be fine if we hired him as the Offensive Coordinator.

  • I am so glad that no one else on the this blog has ever screwed up in there life. Ever heard the sayings "take a look in the the mirror" or "don't throw stones". The man made a bad, bad, choice at Arkansas, as for the Falcons I personally could care less. He found out it is harder to coach a bunch of rich punks than college students and quit a job. I guess nobody has ever quit a job either. Oh by the way did you know that he is still married to the same women, she apparently forgave him. I personally would like to see them hire someone that will not be a puppet. I personally think that Strong or Franklin are the best choice to be the new coach. But to keep bashing CBP is getting ridiculous. We all have done things we are not proud of, I'm sure he is not proud of his short comings at Arkansas. If he is selected to be the next coach I will support him as I have the coaches of the past. Though I didn't agree with some of the past hires, I still supported Auburn. AS ALWAYS WAR DAMN EAGLE BABY!!!!!

  • I love Auburn, and I love Auburn football. I earned my undergraduate degree from Auburn in 2004. My loyalty runs deep enough that for 3 years of law school at the University of Georgia, I wore an Auburn jersey to class every friday during football season - I was "that Auburn guy" to the folks who didn't know me. Now I hated watching my team melt down this season as much as anyone, and while I liked Chizik, I agreed that it was time for a change - something clearly was not working. That said, if Bobby Petrino is hired as Auburn's next head coach, I will not be cheering for or supporting Auburn football during his tenure. Slugs have more backbone than this man. How can a sack of excrement like Petrino teach our players the value of commitment, dedication, and teamwork when his own life is a case study in narcissism and self promotion? This is a man whose word only matters to him when it is convenient to keep it, just ask his wife, or Arthur Blank.

If Auburn men and women truly believe in honesty and truthfulness as our creed suggests, we should be outraged that there is talk of hiring Petrino in the first place. This man has a well established track record of conducting himself in a manner that runs counter to what Auburn stands for, and personally, I'd rather suffer through a dozen losing seasons than sacrifice our principles for the sake of winning.
