How could anyone be happy with Petrino??? He will split the fan base ten times worse than Chizik did when he arrived. If you are parents of a highly recruited player, would you want Petrino sitting in your living room? Would you want a guy who had an affair, lied about it, and destroyed his integrity and honor sitting in your living room representing Auburn? This is the same guy who bolted from the Atlanta Falcons (who by the way share many of the same southeastern fan base with Auburn) without even having a personal meeting with his players? The same guy who destroyed his career at Arkansas? Are we that desperate to "settle for" him when there are so many outstanding young coaches with integrity? Are you even kidding me that Petrino is at the top of the list? If Jacobs hires Petrino, he should be summarily fired and run off as soon as possible. Auburn is NOT a good fit for Bobby Petrino. He has a lot of restitution to make up for what he did at Arkansas and the Falcons. He needs to go coach in a lower level obscure league and rebuild his reputation (if that's possible) somewhere else besides Auburn. I'm just stunned he's being considered top tier. Amazing.

Actually, just because his name is being mentioned by the media doesn't mean that he is being considered by the search committee and the university. All we are reading is the media perception, even if Auburn Undercover or other sources are close to the university and football program. I don't think either Sully, Bo, or Crawford is going to saying a lot to anyone. We will know when they want us to know. And like you say, we don't need Petrino.

    "CHARLIE STRONG
    Current position: Head Coach, Louisville
We’re told some people involved in the search prefer a minority candidate. There are none more qualified than Strong. He’s holding steady, but still considered a second tier candidate at Auburn. He is believed to be heavily in the mix at Tennessee."

Are there seriously people heavily involved in the search who are saying they want to hire Strong because he is black? If so, that is incredibly ignorant and insulting to Strong. If he is the best coach for Auburn, hire him, but to have this in print even before he has interviewed suggests that he would only be hired because a few people involved in the search were insistent on hiring a minority.

So are you saying he is not?? I love Gus but strong has WAY more SEC experience, yet Charlie Strong hasn't gained any ground according to all the coaching lists, in comparison to Gus. In my opinion he is a good choice and should be in our top 3

I agree...Petrino might be a good coach, but the reputation of the university still matters and football is our biggest stage for that reputation. Petrino will divide the fans more than our fearless president divides the nation. We have other great options. I believe in the auburn creed. That should matter in the decision. I forgive Bobby P but that doesn't really mean I want him as my program leader.

Agree, godfather. It's not about judging. It's about trust. There are all the wins in Petrino's resume, but they do not overshadow the negatives. There is nothing in his record that would cause me to believe that something bad would not happen at Auburn. If Auburn plays with this fire, Auburn will get burned. Have we not learned enough recruiting players with bad histories? There are good coaches out there who don't carry the risks. If this were my multi-million dollar business, I would look elsewhere.

Strong has excellent credentials and is a very good football coach. To even suggest that he be hired because of his race is an huge insult to him.

  • If no other choices but JF/BP were available, I'd pick JF. I'm VERY slowly becoming more accepting of BP, because I do believe in second chances. It's interesting to me that a fine man like CG could not discipline his team, but a man with known faults (we all have them, by the way), could get his players to toe the line. Just saying...

  • Who are the people who say they prefer a minority candidate? That's as racist as saying they prefer a white candidate. Race shouldn't be a factor in this. Get the best coach possible and tell the racists to take a hike.

I will be supportive of anyone the Committee picks. I have confidence in the three past players and now successful individuals and I am ready to get on with building the support and the program.

I am just coming to accept this position. I will say now I am not and have not been a Petrino supporter . I was not a Chizik supporter when he was hired. I thought Auburn could have done better than Tuberville. I questioned Bowden's ability to succeed in the SEC. I didn't even think Dye was our best option when he was hired. However, in all those cases, I still believed in and supported Auburn and therefore the coach. No matter who is hired, we must support him if we ever want to overcome and get the program back on track. Something like, "The king is dead! Long Live the King!" My loyalty will be to Auburn University and therefore to our new coach whoever he may be.

There is a bigger picture than just winning, such as the hit your reputation takes over hiring someone with questionable character. All things being equal Jimbo would be the better choice all day long, as there would be no division in the an base.

facepalm_msu ...No...No there's not. It's college football and all of you people keep trying to act like this is a damn crusade because you all care so much about what the media and everyone else thinks.

College football is a bottom line business. Period. It's win or be gone. Yes, BP would have to behave while he is here, but do you really think he is going to mess up again? Really? The guy knows he can't mess up again or his career is over.

Quit trying to make our head coach into the pope. They are hired to develop players, win football games, and make sure these guys stay on track. And don't give me the whole bs about how BP can't do that because he has a proven track record in all three of those areas.
