  • We need a coach named asap, we can't expect our commits to remain with Auburn if we/they don't even know who their head coach will be... the last thing we need is the same situation as last year with the OC position... a lengthy process resulting in an unimpressive hire...

  • Sam,

Who else are you thinking? The big guys aren't leaving their positions - I think Jimbo and Stoops are pipe dreams. They have fertile recruiting grounds and their conferences aren't nearly as tough as the SEC. The SEC is too big of a risk for some coaches. I like Petrino and I think Malzahn would shock some people. We were 1-2 against Alabama when he was here and should have been 2-1 with the 09 effort. If we want to go outside of the current HC prospects we'd have to find a coach in a great position who is disgruntled for some reason - like maybe a Pete Carroll if he's not enjoying his NFL experience. Otherwise we're going to go with someone with SEC experience with a good resume. Florida took a chance on Muschamp and it's paying off - I don't see any reason we wouldn't have similar results with Smart. He's been with Saban a long time and I feel confident he could replicate the system Saban has in place.

  • Also, Smart should only be a fallback plan if Strong is our #1 target and we can't get him... Charlie Strong is Kirby Smart plus some...

True, but doesn't the dead period with recruits start soon?

And... everyone knew that it was going to happen, so i wish/hope that there was/is a plan in place to go down the list of possible candidates to get a new one soon

    Buxton2287

  • Not to say that it's not possible, but I'd guess that a lot of coaches have a lot of pride and are very narcissistic and would love the challenge of coaching in the SEC

UT let their coach go a week before and has yet to make a hire. Arkansas has known fo well over a full season and has yet to make a hire. I don't want to go to quick with this hire and make a mistake. Most people seem to think this thing will be done on Wednesday. If that is true, then it will b a pretty quick search.

Look at 2 of our top choices? One has zero HC experience (I think he has been a great DC), one has 1 year HC experience in the sunbelt, 1 just barely beat a woeful 6-6 GT team and half of his staff is going to be gone. I just don't know why we seem to always do this. Obviously Petrino is not going to be it and I think that is a huge mistake but I can't do anything about that but I am very disappointed. We have been coachless for 8 days. I thought people were saying that this search & choice would be swift this time and not drag out like last time. How are we still just gauging interest from people? Is Malzahn even on the Arkansas list? Phillip thanks for the update. I know these "could be" great hires but this time around I was hoping we wouldn't have to settle for "could be" great hires, I was hoping for someone who has proven already that they can win bigtime by having already done it? If this is the best and the highest we are shooting than I am disappointed. Who is supposed to be the big fish? Surely not Smart, I hope. I wanted Petrino but I thought he would be a back up plan to the big fish they were going to surprise us with. Well, I got surprised I guess. :(

Thanks. I don't mean to come across as ungrateful to Phillip for the updates or sound rude and snappy but I am disappointed in our committee so far. Hopefully though there is something in the works that they have kept hid and they will shock me and I will be the first one in line with an apology!

There is a virtue in knowing what you're getting into and some of the big fish would do nothing more than collect a great salary while they were mucking around trying to find heir butts. Smart has studied Auburn in his duty to Alabama and I doubt that what was wrong with Auburn Football was that much of a mystery to our neighbors. Further and more importantly, he has been preparing himself to be a head coach while under some that were. Don't kid youraself. As I have reently learned, Saban is a damn good head coach although maybe not as bright as some TV guys think. Malzahn. Knows us too well. So important. Starts fixing bad problems on day one. Don't be down. Some of the names that attract so much attention are ego builders, To whom? The fans. To the players? Not so much. .Smart's defense saved Saban's tail during the SEC championship game. UGA has a team and I don't doubt one minute that they would kill ND if they had beaten BAMA. Malzahn's experience shows a talent for the job, and his team did very well in their conference . The imporant things about Auburn he knows and he will immediately fix. Watch this Auburn bunch come alive in 2013 like they did in 2009. The big difference? Got a quarterback and he isn't a freshman anymore. And there is a back up, and if we're lucky even a better one being recruited hard. Time won't be wasted looking for answers and athletes that want to play. What's the alternative? Worry about what bad things are for sure coming down the pike. So recent auburn with a lower case "a." I wouldn't waste time with you except that I think you're one of us and not one of them. Don't make me wrong about that.

Looks as if Kirby may be leading as of Mon morning. Positives 1. Has been trained how to run a successful program 2. Understands how saban thinks 3. No pesky buy-out

Negatives 1. turd 2. even if he beats bama the turd nation will claim partial credit for it 3. no previous HC experience so it will take a season or two to addapt

Smart is NOT a turd. Just coached there. That's like saying Pat Dye is a turd.

  • I don't get the love for Malzahn. He's 9-3 in the sunbelt and won with someone else's players. Chizik won with someone else's players and so did tater tot. GM may turn out to be okay, but we don't need to take a chance on him right now. While Smart may not have any HC experience, I'd rather have someone that coached with Saban than with Chizik, Graham and Nutt. JMO.

  • While I was originally not on the BP bandwagon, I would actually be fine with ANY of the 4 on the "hot" list...

If Gus, or someone of that tier ends up the hire, I think it will speak volumes about the perception of the AU job. I certainly think Gus has a shot at some success I hope, but his hire means that no one of any stature wants the job. It means the perception is that AU specifically is not a good place to coach for any myriad of reasons, or on a larger generic sense, perhaps no one wants to come into the buzz saw of the SEC west, and have to face LSU, and Bama every year.

If a coach doesn't want to come into the buzz-saw that is SEC West, that means he does not believe he can compete with bama and LSU. And we don't want a coach like that anyway.
