Coach Dye to AU

  • From time to time I hear individuals state that some particular person was responsible or largely responsible for Auburn University hiring Pat Dye as head football coach. Over the years several have credited Mr. Lowder, recently one informed me that he knew the inside story of how a Georgia Power official made it happen. What actually happened is nowhere near the stories out there. At that time I was in a position that provided me access to reality.

The wheels began to turn very slowly after the 1980 opening game with Tennessee, very embarrassing, with many dignitaries in the President's Box, the Governor, etc. The Monday after that game, Dr. Hanly Funderburk, who was in his first year as Auburn University President stated to me, "If changing the football coach becomes necessary, I want to take a long look at Pat Dye, who is at Wyoming, and did a great job at East Carolina". Very little more was said untill the Florida Game in Gainesville, a disappointing loss followiing other SEC losses. Dr. Funderburk and Helen had flown down with the team. He asked Barbara and me to drive his car to the game and we would drive back together. After that game things were very quiet in the car, I was driving. Near valdosta Dr. Funderburk asked me what I thought we should do. My reply was that "we should make a change". He replied, "I will start to work on it tomorrow." and he again mentioned Coach Dye.

After the public announcement and with the President putting together a search committee, Governor James called the President to inform him that he was gong to hire Vince Dooley. When that did not occur, the Governor called to say that he had failed and was out of it, which proved to be an accurate statement. Some members of the search committee wanted to interview others, particularly Coach Sherrill, who came with a high price tag, but Dr. Funderburk quietly worked to bring Coach Dye in. Pat came in talking about building a winning program, he said nothing about money other than support for the program. He was intense and obviously tough and dedicated. All of you have heard the sixty minutes answer.
I beilieve that Coach Dye was brought back for a second time, and the offer was made. Mr. Lowder came onto the A.U. Board of Trustees two years later, but he was very helpful in providing an adequate compensation package for Coach Dye.

Dr. Hanly Funderburk was responsible for bringing Pat Dye to Auburn University and he should be afforded the credit. The rest is history.

  • Awesome insight. I look forward to reading more from you. Do you mind me asking what your position at Auburn was?

  • Thanks for sharing! I hope you'll share more as the days and weeks go by. I've been an AU fan all of my 50+ years, but never an "insider". I find stories like this one fascinating.

I was in the stands at the 1980 UTn game with my dad. What a terrible, embarrassing day. Later, I remember being disappointed when Dooley pulled out at the 11th hour. And I was dead set against Pat Dye, a bahr disciple and running the #$@%& wishbone.

I couldn't have been more wrong about PD, of course.

  • I was a senior in 1980, and that Tennessee game was such a major disappointment to say the least, just the 2nd game with the new upper deck. I remember the news media frenzy about Dooley, and how it was almost a done deal. The bottom line is, Dooley had a strong desire to come back to AU, but at that point he just couldn't leave. You have to remember that if he had left, he would have left a team on the verge of the National Championship, with only the Sugar Bowl to go (I doubt UGA would have let him coach the game), and Herschel Walker was only a freshman(and at that point, players didn't leave early for the pros, and he had 3 years to go, but of course he changed that and bolted for the USFL after 3 years). He also had 17 years there at that time, and had the strongest few years of his career 80-82, so I can't fault him for staying. I have to hand it to Dye, he wanted the job, and was willing to resign for that chance. He came in and took charge, something that Barfield never did. Whatever the details, Dye changed the expectations and that changed the program.

  • I was at Coach Dye's house / hunting land this winter. I had always assumed that when he resigned from Wyoming that he was going to get either the Auburn job, if Dooley did not come, or the Georgia job if he did. We asked him if Dooley had gone to Auburn, would he have gotten the Georgia job. Coach Dye said 'No, Erk would have gotten that job and he deserved it."

By the way, I highly recommend all Auburn fans to visit coach Dye's place. Even if you don't hunt, the dinner with Coach Dye is incredible. He has a mind like a steel trap. He can remember every game, every player, and will answer every question you have about any topic. He will also sign anything you want until the pen runs dry!

  • Good old Erk. A lot of folks, especially UGA folks don't realize, he was an Auburn man too.

Coach Dye is always fun to talk to. We ran in to him the night before Homecoming this year and he said "If Auburn could win the National Chanpionship his life would be complete" I am glad CGC let him be a part of it.

At the outset, I too was opposed to Dye as HC! So you can see how much I knew. But, I really did like Doug Barfield as a quality person, and still think he could have been successful with better support from the AD and school administration.
