  • Well said. I do not want a father to ever miss a moment like this with his son. Mistakes aside.

  • Just a heads up before any of you hear it from other sources. I have messed up also along the road of life. Thank goodness I am to old to play football anymore or Evans would be digging skeletons out of my closest. LOL Point is Cecil messed up big time, and it being a national item now, God himself could say Cam is innocent and people still would'nt believe it. Eventually another new sports scandle will come along and this will die down. As a father myself, it would kill me to have my son reach an achievment like this, and not be able to attend.

  • I'm Torn.

As a father of a 24 & 20 year old I would not miss this historical ceremony.

Then for all the attention Cecil would get, such as, Why is he here? Why is he refusing to speak to the Media? bspn, foxsport, thayer evans, etc...would have a field day.

If Cecil did not attend, all the anti-Cam media could ask is, Where was Cam's father.

Like I said, I'm torn. I glad I'm not Cecil.

  • Cecil made a mistake. A big unfortunate mistake; however, if Cam wants his father to attend, then he should be allowed to attend. I think Cam wants his family there and Auburn, You, Me or the Media should let them enjoy the experience.
Cecil came clean with the NCAA, the SEC and Auburn. If a man sins rebuke him. If he repents forgive him.
There is a lot to be said about coming clean.

  • Look, the media is not going to change their stripes here. If Cam's Dad goes or does not go to see his son at the awards they are going to crucify him. Don't you know this is gut-wrenching for this family...and for Cecil more than anyone because he knows the hurt he has imposed. I said it earlier and now again...this is a huge decision for this family. We need to stand by them and not add to their grief. I am not sure it matters what we think they ought to do.

  • I think Cecil should attend....maybe not sit in the crowd with his wife and family (brings me to shots of his mom at SEC game and commentators kept saying his dad was not there), and turns out he was there at game in another area of the game. Perhaps sit in back of crowd disguised or backstage watching...something like that...but he should be there, not as a media figure, but as a father....as it should be.

  • I agree with your assumption of how things went down. I would add that I believe Cecil backed out when Rogers got turned down from Bell. I think he realized Rogers was going to have to bring more people in and concluded this really wasn't a good idea.

I have no issue with Cecil going to New York. I agree I think he should stay in the hotel room. This is Cam's moment. Let him enjoy it. That being said, I would to hear a statement from Cam during his acceptance speech talking about how much he loves his father.

  • A mom's (and wife's) perspective here (I've hijacked my husband's account again.)

I think Cecil should attend. I think that their relationship as a family is a lot more important than anything that might be said by outsiders (which I am one, so are you). Regardless of his motives for his actions with MSU, regardless of any damage that may have occurred to his son's reputation because of those actions, regardless of any damage that may have occurred to Auburn's image, he has the right and privilege to sit with his wife and family if Cam so chooses. He should do whatever his son wants and asks him to do. It is a private issue, no matter what the media thinks and says or wants to twist it any other way. It's between Cecil and Cam (and Mrs Newton). Everone else can stick it.

This thread made think of what Cam said on the field after the SEC game. I'll mess it up if I try to quote it, but it went something like this:

A wise man once told me "who can be against me, if the Lord is with me?"

I just wonder to whom he was referring as that "wise man". I think I know. I think it was his dad. I think this was a message to his dad.

I think Cam's demeanor during this difficult time is because of his faith and a strong relationship with his dad. I hope so. I pray so. I also think Cam was right to remember that quote, because it's the truth.

If Cam were my son, I'd stand beside him AND my husband with pride in BOTH of them. We all screw up. We are all worth forgiving. I'd also tell the idiots who insist on twisting the Heisman ceremony about something other than the athlete's accomplishments and the award (whoever wins) to stick it in their ear.

I am glad to read the dad's perspectives here and am also glad that you can empathize and would support Cecil's presence.

  • If Cam wants his father there then he should be there.

I think that Cam and Auburn will continue to be vilified by the press and whether or not Cecil is there will be a small blip in the greater arc of the story.

It's also possible that the "Cecil" on the list is his brother and not his father.
