***COUNT ON IT....Auburn will be back***

  • I was thinking last night about how indifferent I am right now at game time. I'm just kind of numb to what I'm seeing. It's because I've come to grips with the fact that we're no good. So I see what I expect to see when the game gets rolling, and all I can do is shrug it off or shake my head.

But I think part of that comes from the fact that subconsciously I know it's temporary. It won't last. "Bad football" and "Auburn" haven't gone together for any extended length of time in our long history, especially since the first few years that Baby Boomers were "booming" out of wombs in the 1940's.

Make no mistake about it, Auburn football will return...and history tells us it won't take long....whether it's under Chizik or the next guy.

Auburn hasn't won fewer than 8 games in more than two consecutive seasons since the first three years of the Barfield era in 1976, 77, and 78. Since 1979, 34 seasons and counting, Auburn has not failed to win at least 67% of our games in more than two consecutive seasons.

Futility may creep in occasionally, but it doesn't stay long.

To find more than two consecutive LOSING seasons, you have to go back to ole Earl Brown's short tenure from 1948 to 1950. But we can all thank Earl for losing enough fast enough to have us in position to hire Shug in 1951.

Not only has Auburn been a winning program for a long, long time, we have done it against the best. There are considered to be six traditional power programs in the SEC. They have all played each other to varying degrees of success through the years, some more frequently than others.

SEC Power Programs VS each other: GAMES PLAYED
    396 - Auburn
    349 - Alabama
    340 - Georgia
    311 - Florida
    261 - Tennessee
    238 - LSU

No wonder LSU is 16 games ahead of Auburn on the All-time wins list...they have played 158 FEWER games against the top SEC programs!

SEC Power Programs VS each other: WINNING PERCENTAGE
    .587 - Alabama (196-135-18)
    .500 - Auburn (192-192-12)
    .484 - Georgia (156-167-17)
    .483 - Tennessee (118-127-16)
    .481 - Florida (146-158-7)
    .441 - LSU (101-129-8)

Except for Alabama, Auburn has at least 36 more wins vs the power teams than any other program (more than 70 more than both Tennessee and LSU).

Alabama has a winning record against all of the other five programs, but Auburn is the ONLY other program to have a winning record against at least THREE of the five programs (against Florida, Georgia, and Tennessee). Florida, LSU, and Tennessee have winning records against two programs, while Georgia has a winning record against only one program (ironically, Florida).

    - The last three coaches to lead the program have managed at least one perfect season.

    - Five of the last six coaches have led Auburn to at least one Top 5 finish.

    - 35 (60%) of the last 58 seasons have ended with Auburn ranked in the Top 25.

    - Nearly HALF of the last 58 seasons (28) have ended with Auburn ranked in the Top 15.

    - An average of 1 out of every 3.5 seasons out of the last 58 have ended with Auburn ranked in the Top 10.

    - Auburn is one of only SIX programs to be ranked at least four times in EACH of the last 6 decades (joining Alabama, Texas, Notre Dame, Ohio State, and USC). Read that again...it's impressive.

    - Auburn is one of only FOUR programs to have perfect seasons posted by at least FIVE different coaches (joining Alabama, Michigan, and Texas)

Regardless of who the coach is at Auburn in 2013 or 2014 or beyond, history says we're likely to rise back towards the top of football. No matter what happens the coming five weeks, the Auburn football program is still the Auburn football program. The pains and embarrassment of a year or two cannot erase the foundation that was laid by George Petrie, John Heisman, and Mike Donahue, and continued with Shug and the coaches that have followed in the last half century.

We may get to December and find ourselves uncomfortably in the basement of the SEC, but rest assured that history shows us what the inevitable future of Auburn football will be...and this is not it.

    It will get better.

    It will survive.

And no question, it will thrive.

  • So in other words - Since 1954:

    - Auburn has consistently had the toughest schedule in the SEC, still evident today.
    - Despite this scheduling, Auburn has the 2nd highest winning %.
    - Bama has us beat in total wins by 4 games, though in almost 50 less games against the other 5 of the Big 6.
    - More than half the time Auburn has been ranked
    - A little less than half the time Auburn has been ranked in the Top 15.
    - More than a quarter of the time Auburn is ranked in the Top 10.
    - Auburn should be considered an elite program along with Alabama, Texas, ND, OSU, USC, OK, NE, UM, etc, but isn't.

It's great to be an Auburn Tiger, today and every day!

my opinion is the reason we are not considered an elite program as our history suggests is because of inconsistencies. We will have a great year and the next lose 4-5 games then have another good year or two then lose another 4-5 games then go undefeated. then loose 4-5 games. Dye was the most consistent until Ramseygate. We still had strong players as evidenced by Bowdens 20 straight wins but the distractions were terrible and drug out two seasons. well orchestrated by Donald Watkins.

  • Nice stuff.

I heard the local Bham sports talk show hosts on 97.3 say AU is 11th in winning % nationally for the last 25 years over such programs as LSU, Texas, Notre Dame, Al and others. I have not verified. I did some checking awhile back on historical facts but do not have at hand. Seems like we are between 11th and 13th all time for the past 50 and also past 100 years. Not to discount Alabama as obviously a great, storied program, but prior to the SEC championship game and restructering we played Tenn, Fla, Ga and Alabama every year and seldom played Ole Miss and Vandy. Alabama did play LSU in those days but LSU was not what they are now and Alabama played Vandy and Ole Miss every year. I say in those Bear Bryant years us playing the 4 we played and Alabama playing Ole Miss Vandy every year accounted for an additional win for them or additional loss for us yearly since if you play someone of equal talent like Tenn, Ga. Fla and Alabama you hope to just batt something over .500 while if you played Ole Miss and Vandy every year you probably win at least 80% or more of those games.

    Thanks for the up lift.

I had some more stuff that I left out to keep it shorter (if you can call that "shorter").

In the last 30 seasons (counting 2012, so 1983 to 2012)....

Auburn has the 10th best winning percentage in football at .701. (Alabama is at .702, Tennessee is at .703, and Florida is at .755. But our .701 is better than Texas, USC, Georgia, LSU, Penn State, Virginia Tech, and Notre Dame).

Auburn has the 5th best record at home against Top 10 teams (minimum 20 games) (behind only Ohio St, Florida, USC, and Miami).

Auburn has the 6th best record against Top 10 teams, in front of Michigan, Nebraska, Ohio State, LSU, Alabama, Texas, Tennessee, LSU, and Georgia.

Auburn has the best record in the nation against Top 10 teams when we are also in the Top 10 (min 10 games)

    All-time:

Auburn has the 11th best record against Top 10 teams.

Auburn has the 8th best record at home against Top 10 teams.

Auburn has the 10th best record against teams with at least 10 wins.

Auburn has the 6th best record at home against Top 5 teams.

Auburn has the 4th best record against Top 10 teams when we are also ranked in the Top 10 (behind Miami, OU, USC)

  • Auburn has the best record in the nation against Top 10 teams when we are also in the Top 10 (min 10 games)

I especially like this stat. When we're good....we beat OTHER good teams. I just like that.

Here is the list (minimum of 10 games played as a Top 10 team head to head with other Top 10 teams).

    1. Auburn (14-6-1)--0.69048
    2. Notre Dame (13-6-1)--0.67500
    3. Miami (FL) (22-11-0)--0.66667
    4. Oklahoma (19-11-0)--0.63333
    5. USC (15-9-0)--0.62500[1]
    6. LSU (14-9-0)--0.60870
    7. Washington (6-4-0)--0.60000
    8. Florida (23-18-1)--0.55952
    9. Florida St. (20-16-1)--0.55405
    10. Oregon (6-5-0)--0.54545
    11. Tennessee (10-9-2)--0.52381
    12. Nebraska (16-15-0)--0.51613
    13. Texas (7-7-0)--0.50000
    14. Iowa (5-5-0)--0.50000
    15. Colorado (6-7-1)--0.46429
    16. Wisconsin (4-5-1)--0.45000
    17. Alabama (12-15-0)--0.44444
    18. Penn St. (6-8-0)--0.42857[2]
    19. Ohio St. (11-16-1)--0.41071
    20. UCLA (4-6-1)--0.40909
    21. Michigan (12-19-1)--0.39062
    22. Kansas St. (4-7-0)--0.36364
    23. Georgia (4-9-0)--0.30769
    24. Virginia Tech (2-8-0)--0.20000

We actually top this list from 1993 to 2012 as well with a 9-1 record.

    311 - Florida
    261 - Tennessee

I had no idea that AU was so far ahead of playing the other big 6 as opposed to the others. We weren't the only one, but AU also played Georgia Tech every year till the late 80's.

    Good Post!
Certainly not to kick someone while they're down... however, Tennessee perhaps more than anyone in the SEC has benefited from a traditional soft SEC schedule...aka Vandy, Kentucky, and untill re-alignment Ole Miss.
